Initial testing of a An IX pistol turns into impromptu flintlock lesson for kids

I just finished cleaning the gun... and I got some more gripes! First, the pan turns out to be made of steel and just painted to look like brass (Pedersoli being cheap). Second, one of the bolts that holds the lock plate on was badly stripped! Thankfully it looks like the threads on the lock are...

Initial testing of a An IX pistol turns into impromptu flintlock lesson for kids

Got my new Pedersoli An IX yesterday and there was a brief break in the rain today, so it was time for some initial shots to test its function. As I was getting my stuff out, a couple neighborhood kids road by on dirt bikes and stopped to say "hi". When I told them what I was doing they...

A good time to own a flintlock!

Yet to see a shortage of rocks at my local river. I can't nap em like the fine English flints available online, but I can smack a rock hard enough to get some usable chips if I'm in a pinch. If flints become scarce online, I may have to seriously look into learning the skill.

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

@Stantheman86 It's a shame that you need to insult people you disagree with rather than converse as an adult. I have been civil and respectful despite a differing of opinion, thus doing nothing deserving of insult. You will now be put on "ignore" because I am far too old to be dealing with other...

A good time to own a flintlock!

Was feeling like breaking out my old screw pistol, so I started calling around to my local stores for caps... none in stock. I only need one little can, so ordering online isn't worth the trouble. Guess this means I'm going to be forced to keep playing with my flintlocks! :D

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

@Stantheman86 I will be trying your cartridge load of 30gr as well as 60gr and maybe 100gr. I'm dubious of what 20gr of powder will do for an unpatched 400gr round ball, but I lose nothing by trying it and I own a very nice chronograph to examine the results. Exploring historic cartridges is...

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

Source? Here is a video of a well known gentleman using 60gr cartridges without issue (this would be around 50gr in the barrel). His single target accuracy is bad, but he is trying to shoot a smoothbore pistol with a loose ball at something like 20 meters. I made this thread to try and gain...

    Round Ball Shooters...........

Shot a deer at about 60-70 yards (cant remember exact distance) with a 50 cal rifle, was a double lung, deer ran about 100 or so yards. Was a bear to find as there was no blood trail and the woods were dense!

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

There is a massive difference in powder burning capacity between a 44 caliber barrel and a 69 caliber barrel (I attempted to do the math, but I'm too dumb). The mass of the ball is also significantly different, around 150gr for the 44 caliber ball and 400gr for the 69 caliber ball.

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

Now that's a light load! After priming the pan you're looking at 20-25 grains of powder under an unpatched 400gr ball that's .04" under bore size. My guess would be a muzzle velocity of 250-300fps. On the bright side you could hang a blanket behind your target to catch and reuse your balls...

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

27gr of powder for a 400+ grain bullet? What velocity does such a small charge generate? Interesting info on the original cartridge, that is a surprisingly large charge for a pistol. I suppose I was guessing it would be closer to 80-90 grains. Is there a good online source for this historic...

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

Finally got a Pedersoli An IX pistol on the way and it has me curious, what was the original historic powder charge for the cartridges these pistols used? Also, did it use the same .65" diameter ball? Thanks! -Matt

    low POI

Whoa, didn't realize this thread would turn out like this! Some good advice in here though! I played around with the load and 100gr seems to give the highest POI with Goex Fg. This puts it about 8" low at 40 yards which is fine by me. These are musket cartridge loads and don't need to be...

    low POI

I have been playing around with paper cartridges in my Pedersoli 1777 and am struggling to get the point of impact up to a reasonable level. I'm using a .65" ball in a paper cartridge that is dipped in 3 parts bees wax 1 part tallow. I started with a 120gr charge of Goex Fg which shoots to POA...

Anyone have a flintlock 8 bore rifle?

Can you recommend a builder? I don't personally know any. Also, does Oregon Barrel have a website? I can only find a company of the same name that makes barrels for alcohol. Thanks all!

Anyone have a flintlock 8 bore rifle?

It has nothing to do with "testicles", I want an 8 bore because of the African hunting history tied to the caliber. An 8 bore rifle was by far the most common tool for hunting the "big 5" during the black powder era. What I had in mind was a flint lock rifle with a 24" barrel and enough lead...

Anyone have a flintlock 8 bore rifle?

Is there really no one out there that can make one of these at this time?

Anyone have a flintlock 8 bore rifle?

An 8 bore rifle firing a round ball really isn't that bad in terms of recoil. Now when you start shooting conicals, the recoil can get to be a little much for most people. At the last shoot my friend brought 40 round ball and 8 conical cartridges for his 8 bore paradox gun. By the end of the...

Anyone have a flintlock 8 bore rifle?

I fully agree on it being too heavy! His 600 NE was also something like 23 pounds and my wimpy out of shape arms could barely shoulder the thing, let alone take the proper time to aim (I ended up using a tripod). Having said that, the recoil on both guns was quite fierce compared to the 8 bore...
