    Flints

I like using the hand knapped flints vs the saw cut flints. I usually order mine from Judith at http://www.heritage-products.com/. Great folks to deal with and good pricing.

    Hand Saws

That's pretty much the technique I use as well except I probably don't switch sides that often. I will give that a try, thanks for the advice. I just ordered a feather file made for Japanese saw sharpening. Will see what I can do for sharpening. Does not appear to be a replacement blade...

    Hand Saws

It is actually a 2 sided blade, 1 side for rip, other for crosscut.

    Hand Saws

Good point, a skill I have not yet acquired. I bought the ryoba from Lee Valley as well so assumed it was good and sharp but could be wrong.

Pecatonica swamped barrel tang installation problem

I think @Phil Coffins has the right idea. Get the plate and bolster squared away and go from there. Adding one part at a time will let you know right away when you have a problem. Too many parts could be interfering causing you to think there is a problem somewhere there may not be. Right now...

Pecatonica swamped barrel tang installation problem

I think I would stone the lock bolster/pan/frizzen instead of rounding a barrel corner. Have you checked the bolster to be sure it is dead flat? Has the barrel been draw filed smooth yet?

    Hand Saws

That is what I think is happening also, the blade kind of bows from deflection, gets to cutting off track, and hard to correct. What kind of saw is your western style? I'm not so much worried about slow, otherwise I'd just get a bandsaw like mentioned above, but the tracking is getting frustrating.

    Hand Saws

I've been looking for a used saw,but I do like doing as much by hand as possible.

    Hand Saws

I've been using a Japanese Ryoba saw for ripping the excess wood from blanks. It takes me forever and I am constantly fighting the saw to keep it tracking. I'm no expert on saws but I think the thin blade is part of the tracking problem. Was looking at getting a more traditional style rip...

    Flinching?

Have a helper with you when you shoot to either prime the pan , or not. Then hand you the rifle, you'll know soon enough if you flinch or not. Could also have someone video you while you shoot and review the film. I've found with flintlocks continuous practice is needed. If I dont shoot for a...

    Handmade ramrod pipes

I was told to get the circumference take the inside diameter of your pipe and multiply times Pi. so 7/16 x 3.14159 would equal 1.374.Then whatever you need for tabs. Haven't used this yet but it was taught to me in a class for figuring the ramrod pipes. Hope this helps. I have a diagram for 7/16...
