    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Things are looking promising. Took the dog for a walk in the woods a few minutes ago. The pictures are in the backyard right at the edge of my woods. The scene is the same all the way back as far as we walked. Looks like an acorn explosion.

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Funny thing: squirrel hunting was always my favorite but I usually won't go after them in the rain. But will go after deer regardless of the weather. I guess because of one shot equals more meat. But squirrel hunting is still a bunch more enjoyable.

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

We're suffering the remnants of hurricane Francine here so it was raining pretty hard when I woke up around five. So didn't go. Around seven or eight it slowed to a sprinkle when I took the dog out to water the weeds. While we were out I heard quite a few barking close to the backyard. They were...

If that happens leave your rifle at home and take a sack. When the wind blows them outa the nest just catch em in the sack. Edit: we'll need video of that...

And that hide comes off a whole lot easier if it hasn't cooled too much.

Those guys also had a pretty big operation. They took in at least dozens of deer every weekend and stayed covered up. So I guess they didn't have time to keep track of each specific animal. I'm glad squirrels don't go to a processing house...

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

The guy at the shop I was using was a guy I worked with. He worked there on the weekends. They properly processed the meat, wrapped and labeled it, then put it in their big walk in freezer or cooler one. Don't remember which. But it was allegedly organized where this section was tenderloin, that...

Exactly. Back in the nineties I used to get mine processed. I might shoot a big body deer and get much less meat than I expected. Then the next one might be a tiny spike that miraculously produces a big box of meat. Never questioned it. Then, with the last one I took in, there was no loin in my...

I've got the same shotgun, bag, and thermos. All good stuff. Never thought about that bag for BP shotgunning though. Good choices.

My New Englander is cylinder bore and does a good job killing stuff. I've never used chokes before but this might give you a base line. I'd probably go full if leaves are heavy and IC for more open shots if those are your choices though. Keep in mind this is coming from a guy with no...

Maybe they're on one of those squirrel migrations.

Just parboil a few of them til they are falling apart. Take em out and let cool. Then remove the bones and chop the meat up a bit and toss it in the sauce. If ya wanna kick it up a notch toss in some dried cilantro and add about a half of a small jar of picante (?) sauce. Yum yum.

How much do ya need? I went ahead and started looking this weekend but didn't see any yet. Would be glad to send you some once they're on the ground.

    Squirrel Hunting Attire

Fortunately I think the copperheads and rattlers around here find me too annoying to bother with. They usually won't even talk to me... But thanks for planting that memory of those horrible red with white trim 1980 gym shorts in my head. Oh the horror... 🤣

Yes I wear long thick black socks when going to the woods with my shorts. Works great and helps me avoid pants. Those socks come up to my knees and the shorts come down just over the top of the socks. And all of my shorts are woodland camo.

That porch really does look like a great place to sit and enjoy that first bucket of coffee on a nice cool fall morning.

    Green River knives

Ain't it funny how the smallest things can put a bee in your bonnet that you just can't shake? Happens to me all the time. That warp probably doesn't harm performance on most chores but will eat you alive if you let it. I'd probably done the same thing and ordered the other one too.
