Are you still growing your Garden?

The snow was almost gone off my garden Monday evening. Since then we got 3 more inches of snow. I'll be planting around the 1st of June like usual, with fingers crossed for no late frost. Last year we had 27°f the third week of June. I threw in the towel and went fishing!

    Dumb question

A couple of years ago I had my 20 gauge fusil loaded up with buck and ball for late December doe season. I ended up not firing it that weekend and set it in the corner. Got busy with some ice fishing, snow geese, walleyes and coho salmon, you know grocery shopping. I finally primed it and shot...

    Most Prevalent Calibers?

Around my area the .50 is definitely the most common. It's big enough for most hunting situations and still very shootable for lower velocity target work. As others have said, back in the 70s-80's .45 was probably most popular. I shoot a .54 for deer and bear hunting or a 20 gauge fusil. Our...

Deer rifle, Squirrel Rifle and Smoothbore

I really like my 20 gauge fusil. I'm sure I'd like a 16 or 12 or 11 just as much though. The 3 gun battery of small game rifle, big game rifle and smoothie is exactly what I figured I needed too. I have no idea where the rest of these came from! 😂

    Squirrel Gun Questions

I've only ever had 2 squirrel rifles. A 28" .32 percussion gun was first. It was a good shooter and very cheap to shoot. Sold it because I wanted a long rifle. Now I shoot a .36 flintlock with a 44" swamped barrel. The 36 shoots great with 25gr FFFg so almost as cheap to shoot. Both work fine...

What is a good length for an American longrifle ?

Lots of great advice already. I think a lot of it is dictated by the school of rifle. To me 38" still seems short. I prefer 42"-48". Good luck and get what you like!

    Question on flintlocks

I shoot lefty because I'm left eye dominant. The only issue I have had was from stock design (cast and cheek rest). Never kept me from using those guns, just not as comfortable. I've never had a problem from which side the lock is on. I do have mostly LH flinters now but that was after years of...

First deer with a Lyman Great Plains Flintlock (Cen-Tex late season hunt)

Made meat, good job! My GPR in .54 started to smooth out about halfway through my second box of round balls. Groups tightened up and patches looked better.

    February 2022 Postal Match

I got the target printed, but caught that one virus and been coughing and dragging butt. Today I feel a little better so hopefully on Saturday I'll get out shooting. It's supposed to be a high of 5°!

    Lyman 54 GPR

Mine shoots great with 110gr FFg, .530 Hornady round ball, .015 ticking and mink oil lube. It shoots almost as good with 80gr FFg. Great rifles!

    Good 4" groups sfter 2 or 3 shots/

My .62 smoothie FDC was challenging to work up loads for accuracy. I probably went through 200+ round balls and finally found what works. My gun likes ffg, op card, .595 ball and .010 patch. Stiff charges seem to provide more consistent groups for me.

Congratulations on a successful hunt! Hunting with a flintlock is habit forming.

    Squirrel guns

I recently replaced my .32 flintlock squirrel rifle. The .32 works great for the job, but I was forever dropping those little round balls. No fault of the caliber, my fingers don't work the way they used to. The replacement rifle is .36 with a 44" Rice A weight barrel. With 25 grains of fffg and...
