    Powder flask question

I would strongly suggest you get a powder measure to load the rifle and a flask to fill the measure. One tiny ember down in the barrel and the flask becomes a bomb. Black gunpowder is an explosive and it can be man's best friend or man's worst enemy. I load from a flask into a measure with...

    Pietta 1851 Navy

Dog, I rather resent that remark. The difference in weight between the two balls is minuscule and using a "harder" ball is nonsense. I knocked every KD I shot at yesterday and this morning with my London model Navy 1861 using .375" balls and 20 grains FFFg. Right now ,my Capt. Schaeffer 1851...

    Pietta 1851 Navy

on those pesky trash barrels a .54 Sharps with a 450 grain bullet and a generous amount (60+ grains) of FFg powder will do the job. Remember what Robert Ruark said "Use Enough Gun". Obviously you were not. Respectfully Bunk

New to cap & ball revolvers

Mike Beliveau {Duelist 1954} has some good videos on BP shooting, cleaning and lots of other great information on BP and BP guns. Look him up..

New to cap & ball revolvers

When using Pyrodex CLEAN IT WITH WATER quickly after shooting. Smokeless solvents ( like Hoppe's #9) will NOT work with Pyrodex or real Black Gunpowder. Warm water with a drop of dish washing liquid detergent, then clean very carefully, dry thoroughly and use any kind of gun oil to protect the...

    Roundballs in a Sharps

I do make a paper cartridge long enough to hold the ball against the forcing cone. The ball is separate from the paper powder container. Powder, wad to protect the powder, and a load of lard. I am on a learning curve with the Sharps and sharing experiences is what this forum is good for. Yr'...

    Roundballs in a Sharps

exactly no patch just the bare ball and a load of lard to keep fouling soft. The barrel is lapped with JB compound and JB polish so there has been no leading problems at all. This is my experience I offer no guarantees. Bunk

    Cleaning revolvers

Thia morning I put 30 rounds through mty1851 (Pietta) Navy Colt. About 45 minutes barrel, cylinder, frame and six nipples cleaned and back together. BunkCleaning is easy when you have a system and mine works for me.

    Roundballs in a Sharps

Using wheel weights makes,I am told, bullets that are hard as my X-wife's heart that do not work well in BP guns so I stick to pure lead. Bunk.

    Roundballs in a Sharps

As a matter of fact yes I shoot pure lead balls in my Pedersoli Sharps. Caveat : this bore has been lapped with JB compound and JB polishing compound and is very slick so leading is not a problem. Otherwise you may get some lead fouling. If the bore is rough you may get a lot of lead fouling...

    Scrubbing out lead deposits.

polish the bore with JB Compound a non-imbedding abrasive after cleaning. The smoother the bore the less imperfection to catch the lead and fouling. As a bonus it makes cleaning easier. Bunk

    Cleaning revolvers

Yesterday the .44 Pietta Marshal got 50 rounds through it using real Gunpowder and was broken down completely to a stripped frame. This morning it took an hour and a half to scrupulously clean everything then grease, oil and reassemble. Perhaps a little AR but that chunk of iron is worth a lot...

    Pietta 1851 Navy cylinder jams

yep pardner you are right it is an ancient designee that only lasted from 1847 to just a couple of years ago by Colt and still manufactured presently in Italy. That open top design progressed from a horse pistol to the 1873 Single action. Remington and that snazzy new are construction is... wait...

    Pietta 1851 Navy cylinder jams

Just finished 25 rounds with one of my Pietta .44 Marshals. using 20 grains FFFg GOEX, a 1/8" lubed felt wad and .451" ball which shaves a thin wire of lead. The gun has Slixshot nipples and a Lee Gunfighter main spring. I had no cap jams using Remington #11 caps which worked perfectly for ten...

    Pietta 1851 Navy cylinder jams

A less expensive fix for that short rammer lever is the Slixhand which is an aluminum extension that makes loading easy and protects the hand from that sharp catch. Got one and use it a lot. Bunk

    Pietta 1851 Navy cylinder jams

Italian made replicas actually are working (sort of) kits that need a lot of tuning.. It can be done by following the instructional videos by Duelist 19654, Larson E, Pettifogger*, or by a qualified gunsmith like Goons Gun Works. They replicas are assembled by workmen not gun smiths the way...

    Sharps carbine loading question

I see no reason why not if it is the correct caliber. There is a bullet called a "stake cutter" I call the "flying beer can" that is a cylinder with grease grooves. I have shot a couple and they seem OK. A REAL bullet lubricated should make a dandy hunting bullet. Try it and see how it shoots...
