Gun Tramp - that was an excellent reference. Thanks for that.

    Rollin' My Own.......

Take care in the type of adhesive you use. Some of the epoxy - glue - cement - lacquer stuff mentioned here is very toxic and once vaporized could really do you some harm. This is just two little ol' pieces of paper to stick together - not rocket surgery. Use what grade-schoolers use for basic...

    Pietta .44 new to me

It won’t be loaded until it’s capped. It’s not difficult to load the gun while keeping the barrel in a vertical position. Many shoot in the field where using a loading stand is not really feasible. It’s good practice to learn to be able to load-up just using two hands and the rammer.

    Rollin' My Own.......

There is no need to over-think this. I use (nontoxic) Elmer’s paste to seal the bottom of the cart closed. I use American Spirit (flax) or Raw (hemp) cig papers and get great results. Nitrating may be necessary or advisable for some types of paper but not for those. Paper residue left in...

    Rollin' My Own.......

For BP shooting I use revolvers, mostly. About half the time I’ll be using pre-rolled carts. On the theory that it’s better to have it and not need it ... etc. I always carry some form of flash channel pick. I have it but very rarely need it.

    Colt’s Dragoons!?

Is that a left hand shake? Maybe the photographer was just trying not to obscure the Walker. He does look young but if he was old enough to ride, shoot and follow orders he was old enough for the Rangers. That kid could have been a veteran of many engagements by the time of the picher, or not.

    Colt’s Dragoons!?

Definitely 'horse pistols' but one can never say that they were never carried on the person. Those guys spent half their lives horseback anyway and so if they didn't have pommel holsters they could just wear their rig and the horse would do all the heavy lifting. Not hard to see how and why...

    Rollin' My Own.......

Commercial stump remover is commonly used. I shoot revolvers and use cig papers (American Spirit flax) or hemp and so don't need to nitrate.

    Colt’s Dragoons!?

From Pinterest. The hats are period correct and not uncommon for the time and place. The stitching on the pants is clearly of Mexican influence. How many photographers do you supposed owned Walkers? People didn't need props for the clothing they would normally wear...

    Colt’s Dragoons!?

Here’s another Ranger carrying a Walker. We’ll never know how far or for how long, Note the muzzle and front end of loading lever protruding from the holster.

    Colt’s Dragoons!?

In the film he did. In McMurtry's books Gus carried a Dragoon. Deets packed a Walker with a broken hammer spur. He was the only one of the Hat Creek outfit "stout" enough to carry one all day.

    Remington New Army timing

I have eight Piettas (3 Rems and 5 open-tops) dating from 1996 to 2017 that have been used a lot and get shot regularly; no drag lines.

    Remington New Army timing

In addition to genuine timing issues, sometimes with previously owned revolvers the bolt drag line on the cylinder (ring around the collar) results from earlier owners or handlers not knowing how to or doing a poor job of decocking. Some folks use pretty poor technique when it comes to that...

    Pietta 1858 New Army

Get a new one. .454, all day - and feed your rifling something to work with (for bloody sakes).

    2F in a .44?

Hi Smokey - 2f with a little larger granulation than 3f will burn a bit slower and hence produce less velocity. Otherwise it's fun stuff in a revolver. Burn it and have fun. No problem. Some six-gun shooters even prefer it over 3f.

    36 cal Navy ball?

Among other C&B pistols I’m fortunate to have four Piettas in .36, three of which are open tops and one’s a Remington. They all handle .380 beautifully. Three can use .375 well enough but one (1861 Pietta 1997) absolutely-positively has to have .380 because a .375 will lurch forward in the...

So what is the big difference between using actual BP and pellets?

Yep, "stupid is as stupid does" and pellets are definitely a gimmick.

Question on where & which to buy.

Hi bang - Yours is a shortened 1861. Pietta markets them as "Police" on the Navy and later 1860 Army frame. Original Colt's police were on the .31 frame with a rebated cylinder. Yours is simiflutted with a Navy cylinder, correct? Nice guns, those.
