what size ball to use (exactly)

For the Pietta 1860’s and 1858’s it’s .454 every time. That works best for me and mine.

    Paper nitrating question

Coffee filter paper is too heavy. Cig papers are plenty stout enough. I’ve made and shot a thousand paper carts and they all ignited. Never nitrated, not even once, it’s completely unnecessary.

    1858 Remington Brass real ?

No. Brass .44 and .36 Remingtons are strictly an Italian thing. Never happened in real life.

New Cylinder Alignment Issues on Pietta 1858 New Army

    EMF. Why the mystery?

Making a new main spring for the 62 Police

For most of us, time is money. If or when I need a new mainspring I’ll just buy one from VTI for a whopping seven bucks.

    Pietta .44 navy?

Smoke, maybe I “ get it” now. If you bored out a Navy to .58 there’d be no barrel left, Just thin air. Good pun.

    Pietta .44 navy?

Smoke - Maybe to save time and effort you could just get a brass Remington.

    Pietta .44 navy?

Was Colt (peace and blessings be upon him), prior to the Bessemer steel process, limited to the caliber he could put on a Navy frame? The answer may explain why Dragoons were so big and heavy and why the 1860 Army was finally possible for mass production. Two observations that may be true but...

Pastor - your various chronograph results published here and elsewhere are really informative and appreciated. Good work once again and many thanks.

    Wire bolt/trigger spring

Dismissed, kids. Springer calls them “novelties”. I guess we’ve been wasting our time playing with novelties. Why did we even bother?

    Loading the cap and ball

Pouring powder down the bore of a cap and ball revolver is a thoroughly bad idea. Powder granules could adhere to soft fouling and light up on the next shot. The loading port or window is built into the gun for a reason. My suggestion is to do it the way it has always been intended to be...

Ease and accuracy of shooting. 1851 Navy vs 1858 Remington. Thoughts?

Gay & retarded. I prefer not making jokes about killing Americans.

    Steel vs Brass frame differences?

Stay away from brass .44’s if the intention is to actually do some shooting. Those are a loosing proposition. If one is only interested in a “bright shiny object” without any sense of history, then fine, go for it.

    1851 pietta pistols

Don’t guess. Why are they considered to be Pietta? Are they marked Pietta?

    Not toys

We don’t dog on “Rednecks”, not even in California. Rude behavior - won’t tolerate it. You know the thing.

    Interchangeable cylinders ..

Nope. For Pietta the new cylinders (CNC) will work in the older (pre-CNC) frames but not contra-wise.

    Not toys

The purpose of BP firearms is to have a really good time but the watchword is - “Homie don’t play.”

    Not toys

The OP states the questionable supposition that BP firearms are generally treated less safely than modern firearms. If a person is careless with modern guns they’ll probably treat BP firearms the same way. I’ve never seen anyone who is careful with modern guns but is careless with a BP piece...
