    Pietta 1851 Navy

Just an expression, old fellow. Don't let it trouble you. It's just that .375 is subprime ammo for a .36 C&B. Maybe you knew that.

    Knuckle buster

TrapperDude makes an excellent point. Many who experience 'knuckle rapture' shoot their Rems with the knuckle making contact with the TG. It's a shock wave causing the problem and not a matter of getting battered. Keep the knuckle off the TG and hold tight enough for the gun and hand to...

    That is incorrect, sir.

    why difference in powder charge?

Mr. Gus - See Isaac Newton's Principia. Published by the Royal Society 1687. He was the first to describe that of which you ably referenced. PDF still available.

But, it perforated Davis Tutt at 75 yards. Job done.

    Pietta 1851 Navy

I've perforated my share of 55 gal. steel oils drums. Up the charge a little, use a harder ball than pure lead. Shoot .380's cause .375 is for girls. Aim at enter mass or lower and you'll hole that thing.

    Pietta 1851 Navy cylinder jams

For longer shots both sights are necessary or you'll ''slip up'', as Hickok phrases it. Closer-in, the front sight works well on its own.

Yep. As distinguished from the later 'belt pistol'.

Pushing percussion caps on with wooden dowel....

In cold weather a capper is handy. When it's warm fingers work good. mostly. Either way, I'll go through again and seat the caps firmly with a dowel - whether they need it or not. I don't like that seating caps with the hammer business. Sure it works (at one's peril) but that ain't how it's...

Pushing percussion caps on with wooden dowel....

I've tried that in a shop vice and with plyers, etc. Pressure alone won't set caps off. Needs "percussion", as in … you know.

Lead & Sand: Remy in the Desert

Nice looking Remington, Smokey. You did good. What gauge of steel wool do you recommend? I've used 0000 and it seems a little light. Have you had and challenges with olive oil soaked felt wads contaminating the powder? Again, great look and nice shooting.

    Pistol paper cartridges

American Spirit. Way to go, Rodwha. Flax. Some hemp papers are good too. Raw, for example. Folding over and pasting the base gives a flat one layer thickness. I' m sure twisting the base works or Rodwha wouldn't use that method.

Much awaited Pietta Colt 1851 Navy Brass arrives!

Nice new gun. Except for being a .44, yours is a Schneider & Glassick Reb gun, I got my brass frame from EMF too. T7 works fine and safely in brass frames. Keep in mind the 15% reduction rule. Some people follow it and others don't. I do and use 15 grains max in my only brass frame - a...

Are the ring rub/scratch marks on a revolver typical?

Mr. deerman - think Moonman was referring to the trigger/bolt return spring and not the hand / hand spring assembly. Ring around the collar / bolt drag looks terrible on a cylinder and, as Zonie explained, the cause is readily correctable. Some people think that it is normal and acceptable -...

    Molybdenum grease bore lube?

Not sure what kinds of fumes burnt moly grease produces. It may not be something you'd want to inhale or even be around. Properly proportioned bee's wax and olive oil already works pretty well.

    Dragoon vs 1860 Army?

I love Dragoons, especially Third Mods, but get an 1860 Army. Then, get on a horse and move around and shoot it. You’ll be a life long convert. Works real well a’foot too as many here will attest. If you don’t have an Army then get one. You will wonder why you waited.

    1861 colt navy 36 cal

I have a Pietta 1861 (too) that I’ve been shooting regularly for 23 years. 1997 [BI]. I started out using .375 balls for a lack of knowing any better but it soon became clear that those were way too small. The balls would ‘walk’ forward in the chambers while shooting. Switched to .380 and...

what is considered a good collection of BP revolvers

An 1860 Army would go well with the Remington and the Navy. Any Zen collection really needs an Army.
