    Cherry stock Kibler SMR

What finish did you use? You say the stock is getting darker, was any stain used, has it been out in sunlight much?

    The barrels actually are 31/32nds.

    Hawken Help Part Deux

I'm pretty sure the filler and stain will work together. Don't remember if Dangler stain is water or alcohol based. Water base would certainly be safe. I belive the French red filler is linseed based. When dry alcohol shouldn't hurt it. Rub filler in across the grain, let dry, and sand with the...

    Hawken Help Part Deux

Get number 2 unplated screws from Brownell's or elsewhere. They are a bit bigger than what comes with the kit, but do fit properly. Redrill the pilot holes to 1/16th. The stock certainly looks like european walnut. You should fill the pores. French red filler is available at MidwayUSA. It isn't...

    Rasps For Gun Making

The two Liogier rasp I ordered arrived today. They are really nice -- nice enough to be worth the price. One is the long, narrow gunsmiths model. I can see why Dave Person values his. There have been times when working wood I've wished for either a longer or narrower rasp. This lean tool will...

New aftermarket stock for Pedersoli Jaeger?

Citristrip does a good job taking off oils and other finishes. I've put shorter stocks in the oven and baked the finish off. The process leaves the wood very clean.

    Barry Lyndon movie fakery.

Years ago, I don't remember when or why, I saw a movie about some affair in Russia in the 17-hundreds. One scene stuck in memory. The guard is called out to meet some disturbance. It made me laugh hard as the weapons were Mosin Nagants.

    SOLD Cabela's Haken 58 cal.

If you search through the threads you will find those who have one of these 58s love them, those who sell there's regret it, and those who don't have one wish they did. They're one of the most liked rifles out there. The barrels actually measure 31/32nds, a one thirty-second larger than...

    Hackberry Build Trade Gun

Love the Hackberry. How did you finish it.? Hackberry is a good substitute for oak. It could probably pass for ash if finished in similar fashion .

Does anyone have information about the Village Restorations replica of the 1792 Contract rifle?

It's important to remember the rifle in question is not a representation of the true 1792 contract rifle. It's a fantasy piece dreamed up by Stith et al to represent a plausible rifle in use by L&C. I think the 12--page discussion I linked to above cast doubt on the plausibility of the Stith...

    hunting eastern washington

An old friend of mine, now gone over, lived at Republic. He gave up deer hunting as there were very few deer in his area, which takes in some of the areas mentioned in posts above.

    Rasps For Gun Making

The Liogier rasps I ordered (see post above) have been forged. In an email from them they said the tools will now be stitched and should be ready by July 1st. When you order from Liogier you are getting truly custom tools made just for you. I'm looking forward to receiving the rasps. I may put...
