    2nd Generation Colt revolvers

Hello all I hope all is well. I have a 2nd generation Colt army that I absolutely love. Question for ya... The 2nd generation 1851 Navy has that silver backstrap on it. Did Colt ever make anything similar to that back in the 1800s? It is gorgeous either way but historical accuracy means a lot to...

    Revolver Accouterments

Id get a nipple wrench and a pistol cleaning rod as well. There are a lot of things worth their weight in gold for convenience, and you will probably figure out what those are for you personally after a few shootings. Also some oil like ballistol or rem oil is a good idea. After a few cylinders...

    PA elk hunt results

I saw Steven Rinella of Meat Eater hunting Kentucky Elk. Like a bunch of us I idolize ole Danny, so being able to hunt Elk, where he did, as he did, with a flintlock rifle is a supreme dream of mine. I am glad it is becoming more attainable every year! Are there any estimates/numbers for what...

    Using tow for wads?

One thing to look out for is that tow can sometimes be an absolute bear to get down the barrel if you use too much without lube. I have had to hammer a dry tow wad down the barrel when I accidentally eye-balled too much to roll up. You wouldnt think it, or at least I didnt.

    Long range shooting

Sorry who was he? I didn't have luck on google. It kept wanting to give me things about Lewis and Clark in Idaho😂

    .58 for Squirrel?

I apologize. I somehow missed that you were talking about a smoothbore. My smoothbore is .58 caliber and it is a squirrel and bunny getting machine. I am not recommending this but I rarely even measure the shot. I grab a handful that looks like it is between "not enough" and "too much" and throw...

    .58 for Squirrel?

Shoot him in the head. If you miss and hit the body then you can still make "squirrel goo" out of what is left lol. You always here about the "barking" tactic but I have never tried it. I want someone to convince me that it works first. I am not a doubter, just that I don't get enough squirrels...

    Long range shooting

I always think about their eyes too. Corrected vision was out of the reach of many/most, and I know personally that I would be useless with a rifle if my vision was uncorrected. I could shoot a deer without glasses to about 50 yards and that is it. If I lived back then a rifle would be wasted on me.

    PA elk hunt results

For someone that lives on the East Coast it has given me a real sense of pleasure knowing there are Elk in PA. Part of the allure of visiting out West is that you see animals we otherwise associate with an "older time". Elk in PA make me feel that way. Glad you got to enjoy it! I am glad to see...

    Long range shooting

We always here about the incredible shots that the old timers made with their long rifles (Daniel Boone or Timothy Murphy). We have all seen and accomplished some crazy lucky shots but my question to you is, outside of lucky shots and exceptional individuals, how often do you think there were...

What brands would you not recommend and why?

Not the entire brand but one particular product...Hoppes #9. I know its iconic and works well but it is poison in a can. Give me Ballistol or Rem Oil if no Ballistol.

    Why a smoothbore?

I live in an area where rifles were virtually non-existent in the time period that I like to study (1700-1780s New England) so that is one motivation. I hunt areas that generally have less than 100 yards of visibility and most of the time less than 60 yards so I don't give up a lot to a rifle...

Thanksgiving Traditions That People Don't Understand

I don't know about the rest of the South but Virginia used to have quite a bit of cranberries. Rarer now but I still stumbled upon a few hiking around the Shenandoah Valley

Thanksgiving Traditions That People Don't Understand

I was born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and we never once had Thanksgiving without oyster stuffing when I was little. Now I make it every Thanksgiving and my fellow New Englanders think I am insane. I love the stuff. We also commonly have manicotti and antipasto as well, but that is an...

    historical patch lube

Hello all I hope is well! What are some of the historical ways of lubing patches for flintlock rifles around the time of the Revolution? What mixtures/techniques/substances would have been used? I am already familiar with bear grease. Thanks!

    My fowler arrived yesterday.

My first fowler was a TVM. It lives with my best friend now but boy was it well made. Wonderful wood and top notch work. Enjoy! 16 gauge was a great choice.
