    2022 Plains deer hunt report

Had a great week hunting with an old friend on the plains. Mornings were spent watching for mule deer and evenings were for whitetail sits. He had been to Colorado 3 times and this time he would finally fill his tag. I had him setup on a good trail and very nice 8 point whitetail came in to 25...

    Bear Oil

I ended up between 4 and 5 parts bear grease with 1 part beeswax. Store it in tins and used for patch lube. Works well. Also use same mix on my boots where again it does well. One thing I learned when putting up bear grease that may help. I get my quart and pint jars heated up while rendering...

    Eastern CO buck

He was actually in that 24-25" range. Always hard to tell from camera angles.

    Eastern CO buck

Appreciate the compliments. Been fortunate to have some success on mid Oct bucks in farm country the last few years. They have all been excellent table fare. Mostly whitetails but now also this mule deer.

    RB past 50 yards?

Have shot a few antelope does right at or slightly past 100 yards. Deep penetration with .530 roundballs. Have killed all of my mule deer and whitetail bucks at under 85 yards with .530 and .570 roundballs. I hunt mostly on the wide open plains but can frequently take advantage of weeds and...

    Where to hunt

Western Colorado has tons of black bears and the non-resident price is quite low. Thinking $100. Call one of their hunt planners and start killing some. Between my son and I we have killed 8 in last 10-11 years. Saw 15 this year but none were as big as we wanted. Berry patches, oak brush...

    Trail-cam pictures.

One of the bucks I saw a lot this summer. Hoping to see him in person soon. Great pics throughout this thread.

    Eastern CO buck

Used a 58 caliber Hawken shooting a .570 roundball to take this mule deer on Sunday in CO. Son and I snuck in close and when he jumped up and stopped, I was able to get him. About a 40 yards shot. Real good time. The other deer remained bedded while we loaded him up in the truck about 100 yards...

Don’t sleep on the .50 PRB, Story and pic.

This can't be true. Jim Shockey says round balls bounce off. Personally, I have grown to love roundballs and planning on some good hunts this fall. Nice they kill big hogs so easy too. Shot some good bucks in recent years and no survivors lol.

TRADE WTT Bear lard for a fleshing knife

Hello, Down to my last 2 pints of bear lard. Looking for a decent two handled fleshing knife. Let me know if any interest. The bear lard was slow rendered and double filtered. Odorless.

    2019 Colorado Buck

Those early bucks have huge bodies. Nicely done.

    Bear

Find a waterhole that both the elk and bear are using. Have shot several bears that way and see a few elk. Best waterholes for both are often in oak brush.

    Well there it goes....

People around here drive with their head in the clouds. So many of those road kills are avoidable. Looked like a nice buck.

    Bear

Have killed or been in on 7 bear kills in last 7 years in Colorado. Bears in September here feed on average 20 hours a day. They almost never stop eating. If you are in an area with berries, acorns and also some water, odds are you will have bears all around you. Sit tight and kill one. Have...

    Elk load dilemma

My righthanded 54 was shooting round balls through large bucks with 95 grains of powder, but it seemed to like that load best. With limited testing the 58 loads super easy with a .015 patch and that matters to me for field use. And 100 is my outside limit with my eyesight so we'll be fine at 80...

    Elk load dilemma

Getting close to go time boys. Settled on 80 grains of ffg Swiss with a .570 roundball for this fall. 34" GRRW barrel. Was recommended that I up the charge to 140 grains lol. We'll see if slow and steady will work I reckon.
