    Mammoth ivory inlay...

That was my thought as well, but I'm sure it will be slightly proud of the stock and I'd otherwise expect to sand it down, which I obviously can't do if the stock has been stained. Just looking for options.

    Mammoth ivory inlay...

Does anyone know if Mammoth ivory takes wood/leather stain? If so, how can I protect it when I stain my stock? Blue painter's tape? I haven't done so yet, but I'm thinking about doing a cheekpiece inlay with Mammoth ivory and I'd like to know that it's not going to look bad.

    shooting my 54 southern rifle,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Great photo. I see that you're in the "woods of South Carolina". Just spent some time getting a look-see around the Oconee/Pickens County areas and will likely be back in a week or so to look around some more. We're hoping to get a seasonal retirement/vacation home down that way.

When building a rifle from a blank or kit, are there any steps U dislike?

I'm a slow learner and still consider myself a beginner even after 8 or 10 rifles and kits. That said, I have better tools now than when I started and I have developed some skills, at least to a degree. When I started, there were LOTS of individual projects that drove me crazy, but now I...

Kibler Southern Mountain rifle kit and supplies arrived. It's going to be a fun build.

Great job. I did a Kibler some years ago when they first came out and being a beginner (and not as careful about details as I should have been), it finished very nice, but not great. I gave a friend (actually sold it VERY cheap) a stock blank that he sent down and he just received his kit as...

    Incompetent Auctioneers

One of my pet peeves as well. I understand that the average auctioneer or his people can't know everything, but they're giving away money by not appropriately identifying this stuff. You'd think they'd want the money and would find someone to help them with descriptions.

    Another black powder ordering question....

I had tried Powderinc and they just didn't have what I needed/wanted at the time and I would have had to have made at least two orders, which obviously increases the cost per pound. I got what I needed from Back Creek, not a great price, but certainly acceptable given the current state of things.

    Big Game Hunting

Thanks Ron, I'd let you know by PM if I needed/wanted some help. Greatly appreciated.

    Another black powder ordering question....

WOOOHOOO!!!! They did in fact have what I needed. One of my buddies was happy with saving a few bucks on the cheap stuff (Graf) and they didn't have that, but he'll be satisfied with the Goex instead. I got my OE and they did say they may need to substitute Goex for the 1 can of OE 4F I had...

    Another black powder ordering question....

Thanks, I'll give him a try.

    Big Game Hunting

I've mostly given up on big game hunting. I'm in my mid fifties, have killed a lot of deer and turkeys and worked as a game warden for 32 years before retiring in 2019. I still enjoy shooting muzzleloaders and still do a bit of hunting here in my home state of PA, but I had basically given up...

    Another black powder ordering question....

Like many of you, I'd like to increase my stores of black powder and have inquired with a few buddies, who also want some. I think between us, we'd like 16 or 18 pounds of powder, but it's not all one brand or granulation. If it was just 18 pounds of Goex 2F for instance, I'd just sign up to...

Finishing Stock with Pure Tung Oil

Not sure if this is permitted or not, but I watched this several weeks ago and enjoyed it, probably learned something as well. The LIES and confusion of Tung Oil wood finish - YouTube

    Ordered my Kibler kit

Not sure I have any real confidence in myself rolling my gouges without some sort of guide system. David Price uses a cool system with steel bars that keep your gouge at a consistent angle and I may have to look into building myself something like that. On a different topic, has anyone used...

    Ordered my Kibler kit

Yep, I got a new set of Stanley Sweetheart chisels (acceptable, but not the best quality available) and started using the scary sharp system on them and I've had a smile on my face ever since. I still don't know how to properly sharpen gouges and V-tools, but I finally feel confident that my...

    Hatfield rifle

If it's like my old Blue Ridge rifle (and I think it is), you take the barrel off by unscrewing the barrel screws from the underside of the ramrod thimbles and through them. Then unscrew the tang and the barrel comes off, easy peasy.

    Crazy bidding on Gunbroker

I'm about to put a couple of muzzleloaders up for sale. My intention has always been to do so here, but I have a brother who occasionally buys and sells guns and he says that lately he's gotten more for every single gun and every batch of ammo than he would have anticipated, so I'm considering...

Looking for Members near Aiken, SC

I don't live there, but my wife and I are coming down next week to explore Pickens and Oconee Counties with the idea that we may purchase a seasonal retirement home in the area. When/if it happens, I'll definitely be looking for muzzleloader related events or things to do in the area.

    Why swamped barrels?

Lighter weight is nice, but the bigger issue is likely balance. Back in the day, 11 and 12 pound rifles were common (not for me), but you want a rifle to balance well whether it's 6 pounds or 13.
