Why does smokeless powder peel open a muzzleloader like a banana?

Thank you everyone! Like I said, d*** sure not gonna fart around with smokeless. I just wasn’t clear on why. Good physics discussion! Shadowalker

Why does smokeless powder peel open a muzzleloader like a banana?

Broomstick, your post beggs the question, at say 60 grains, would the ML still rupture? I get the pressure gradient on faster smokeless, but this can be engineered around. I saw another video where the guy claimed a 3000 fps ML! I’m fairly sure he wasn’t using BP! If the question is engineering...

    Short Sword

I agree with TDM, if that wicked beauty of a blade could talk, what tales! I don’t imagine that their are many left in this world, wonderful.

Why does smokeless powder peel open a muzzleloader like a banana?

I crossed paths with a video on this forum, can’t remember where, that demonstrated what happens with smokeless powder. Scary! It blew up every ML it was loaded in! I thought it was a bit of an over charge at 150 grains, but with BP I think the barrels would have survived? Is the issue the metal...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Actually yesterday… First outing with my Kibler Colonial 50cal, 60 grains, 25 yards. Love this rifle!

    Questions on the Kibler Colonial

I used the aniline alcohol dye approach on my curly maple Kibler Colonial. I think it went very well! One has a fair amount of control over color saturation and tint. I went light, but any color combination is possible

    Two virgins at the range!

The trick is a small clean round hole. I paid too much for a commercial product, but it came with two hole sizes. I read a hot paper clip makes an acceptable sized hole in electrical tape

I read a lot about flinching with a flintlock, I found it to be no more distracting than a cap. I use musket caps. It’s the follow thru, the idea of remaining still thru the shot. As I practiced that art (think Zen) my groups tightened up!

It is also my first outing with putting a peep on my shooting glasses. I got bad eyes, and a peep gives me maybe 2 degrees of clear sight picture. I can hold the front sight and the target easily! Your mileage may very.

    Two virgins at the range!

Longcruse, Frankbowet: I will go thru her with hot water. I do not like a dirty gun. I enjoy building them, love shooting ‘em, and take some pride in knowing they are clean when I lock them up.

    Two virgins at the range!

Housework! Frank rower, It took 15 or more cleaning patches to get an almost clean one out of her. I was firing Schuetzen FFF, and priming with Schuetzen FFFF. Dirty, dirty! By the time I dry balled her, I looked like a coal miner! After clearing the dry ball I started to clean her. I tried Bore...

    Two virgins at the range!

My first trip to the range with my Kibler Colonial. I have never discharged a flintlock before, and my Kibler long rifle is brand new! She is 50 cal with a one in 70 twist. I used a 0.49 ball and 0.015 prelubed patch. 60 grains of black powder with open iron sights. I also used a bench rest on...

    First attempt at a horn

I am no explosives expert, but if my horn lit off, it holds almost a pound, nails in the plug would not be my problem! I think popping off a pound of black powder on my hip might spoil my whole day no matter what
