    Hunter’s Star location?

Thanks Pierrot and VA Hawken, I like the look too! I am hoping to build a period correct 1750-1780 Kibler Colonial. I believe the star was a common embellishment, I just don’t want to be called out at a reenactment for getting it wrong

    Hunter’s Star location?

I am building a right hand flintlock, but I shoot long guns left handed. I want to put a silver Hunters star on the stock. After some research, it seems the cheek rest is the desired location. My question: is that so the hunters cheek is touching the star for luck? Or is it just conventional...

WANTED Custom soft leather gun case wanted

I am looking for a soft leather rifle case. The rifle is a Kibler Colonial. 60” long, maybe 61” I am looking for something, my mind is open, but that it would be 1750-1780 correct. My persona “The Landed Local Gentry” who never misses the town turkey shoot. I would like to carry the rifle with...

    Wood finish

Pictures please, I too will be finishing a Kibler soon. I will try iron nitrate, on a sample piece. I am also interested in alcohol based wood dyes, and will try them as well. Best luck on your beauty!

Point a tenderfoot in the right direction on selecting a kit

I built Traditions Kentucky pistol as my first build. Loved the kit and love the finished product! I found my Traditions kit to be well made, and easy to finish. You will enjoy your choice.

    Percussion rifle for round balls

I have 3 cap locks, a Traditions Kentucky pistol 50cal at 1 in 24, she likes 25 grain and a round ball best. A Pedersoli Kentucky long rifle 50cal at 1 in 48 and she seems happy at factory recommended 70 grains and a round ball and then there’s the Hammer! Pedersoli’s Bounty Hunter in 50cal, a...

Controlling color and shade on fancy maple

Thanks 1BadDart, washing out any machine oil from steel wools manufacture, I understand. But then what? Use that steel wool to remove black dye, to reveal grain? And do this with each subsequent color? Or apply subsequent dye colors on top of a kinda black gray stock then knock back down all dye...

Controlling color and shade on fancy maple

Oldwood… If I can pick your brain a bit? I have read, and reread your post above, and other posts of yours on finishing curly maple. On your post above, you apply black dye first, leaving the stock more or less black gray. Then you talk about 0000 steel wool. Then you discuss applying a red...

Controlling color and shade on fancy maple

“Also, you can adjust color after staining by tinting the finish as well, which often enhances chatoyance, the shimmering "cat's eye" deep glow in the wood.” Dave, I so want that Cat’s eye look! I did order I piece of hopefully comparable stock to practice on. If I can, I hope to do a grid...

Controlling color and shade on fancy maple

Thanks guys, for your sage advice, as with every other aspect of this sport/love affair, there is much to know! With my Colonial i ordered a scrap of curly maple to practice on, I also picked up Jim’s aqua fortis stain as well. I figure I can do 2 or 3 side by side experiments. At the moment, I...

Setting color and shade on an Extra Fancy maple stock

When I ordered my Colonial, I also asked for a practice piece of fancy maple to test my carving and staining abilities. To that end, I just ordered a sample kit of aniline dye - alcohol based wood stain from Keda Dye stain powder. One shot on their web site sold me on experimenting with these...
