Bad Shot Leaves a Hard Tracking Job

Oct. 21st was the muzzleload opening in Florida. 35 minutes after shooting time I hastened a shot at a doe only 25 yards away as she crossed a small shooting lane. The shot was a bit too far back and I only got part of one lung, liver and gut. I never found a drop of blood for 85 yards and then...

An interesting 32 caliber deer hunt

My internet connection is so slow that I can't load many videos so I didn't watch the video. However, even though modern bullets and sabots are anathema on the forum, I wonder how effective a short, saboted modern bullet would do in the same situation. :dunno:

An interesting 32 caliber deer hunt

Due to the lack of expansion and penetration of a .32, I won't deer hunt with anything smaller than a .45. PRBs are not the best game getters with larger game and I need some kind of a blood trail to recover one.

    Colorado Pronghorn

That is indeed a very nice goat. I wish he had grown some long hooks to go with the rest of his rack, Did you measure him? If so, what was the score?

    As another year passes...

You work? I thought you just hunted for a living. My bubble has burst. 😢

Is that a graylag goose? (I am NOT a goose expert having never shot one. They seldom come to central Florida.)

    Bear Season In Maine.

Nice bear and nice gun. I see 3-5 bears every deer season on my place while hunting but they are protected here. The Game Commission has a majority of anti-hunters on it.

    First flintlock deer! So hooked!

Nice slick doe and a beautiful rifle make your hunt one to remember.

Okay, this goes against the grain for me but....

I still have my original Baker with hand climber (hoarder?). I had a smaller one called a Mite-E-Mite with no hand climber. I probably left if in the woods several decades ago. I liked them because they were light and folded flat. Here's me with an early model compound bow and the Baker...

Okay, this goes against the grain for me but....

I've used a climbing stand since the 1st Baker stand came out in the '70s. If that thing didn't kill me, I don't think the sturdier and better-built stands that followed would have and they didn't. I used a climber several times last season and plan to use them again this year. When using a...

    traditional or modern?

I like the idea of being able to hunt and shoot even if components are not commercially available. This would necessitate a flintlock, however, I cheat a bit and use more caplocks than flintlocks. If only shooting paper and gongs is going on then flintlocks are fine. But if I'm hunting deer, I...

    Strange but true

If I read the above chart correctly, one could legally hunt deer, bear, and elk with a .25 ACP pistol as long as he used hollow-point or soft point bullets. I have found that muzzleloading rules in Florida seem to vary depending on which game warden you encounter. I had to get an email response...

Great composition on that photo. I really like it.

    Black powder revolver for protection

The only reason I can think of to carry a BP revolver over a smokeless powder handgun is that you're a convicted felon who can't legally own a modern firearm.

45 caliber round ball for Deer???

Even though this is an ancient thread, the info is worthwhile. I have posted this photo before but it is a small buck that I shot in the leg with my .50 cal. Hawken. He hobbled towards me and stopped 40 yards away. I pulled my Ruger Old Army with .457 round balls and shot him through the lungs...

    Load development

In my .54 New Englander I started with 70 gr. of 2F black powder then 75 gr. and then 80 gr. I settled on 80 because the recoil was getting to be uncomfortable. It shot the best pattern (3 shots) with 75 gr. but I moved up to 80 for shooting a bit longer distance. I used T/C Maxiballs not...

The Words We Use and How They Define Us

"Killed" and "Butcher" for me. Harvest denotes that you raised it either a crop or an animal. Process is non-descriptive. My bank can process a loan application
