Looking for suggestions as to how to get into hunting

I am the oldest by far of 5 kids. I grew up in the 3rd-largest city in the country. No one in my family hunted and I got the bug watching the old Davy Crockett series on TV. My pal and I made our own bows and arrows and tried to shoot rabbits and squirrels in the large forest preserve a 1/3 mile...

Looking for suggestions as to how to get into hunting

The best way is to take a hunter's safety course. They are free in many states. While attending the course, ask the instructors any questions and also other participants. Knowing how California is about everything, it probably is mandatory to pass a safety course before being able to purchase a...

    10 crows...

I hate crows. I've been shooting them for about 35 years now and haven't killed enough. They wise up quickly and avoid the places I've shot them before. I have a 60 acre piece of land and for about 6 years none would fly over my place. They would actually flare around it. Evidently, the...

    Johnson Peep sight for hunting?

If one is young and their eyes are still capable of adjusting, I don't see the absolute need for a peep. However, my very long flintlock had a regular V notch and a front post. The front post was 40+" away from my eye. I couldn't begin to focus on the front sight and target due to presbyopia...

    Beaver's

IMO, there are enough beavers around to negate any need to transplant them. Just like wild hog introductions in areas that don't have any ... it's not long before you wish you never saw one.

    Beaver's

Guys that "noodle" for catfish in river and lake banks sometimes get bitten by beavers or, worse yet, gators. There are millions of acres of pine trees on tracts in the South owned by timber companies. They have a whole lot of damage done by beavers and usually hire trappers to kill them.

    Trophy hunters

I think that horns and antlers were valuable for prehistoric man. Antlers were used for many things including a tool for fashioning flints for arrowheads. Horns probably were less utilitarian but still a good score. Prehistoric man was almost the same as us. They were jealous when some other...

Anyone else use the old Thompson Center Maxi Ball system bullets for hunting?

I used to use maxiballs and they did a fine job on game. IMO, they performed better on deer than round balls due to the increased mass. One deer was knocked down by a maxi hit through the lungs; it got back up but fell again after running in a small circle. The trick is to have them fit very...

20 gauge load experiments---results with and without SkyChief method

The fiber wad produced a hole in my patterns (donut) using the "typical" loading procedure. I tried splitting the fiber wad in half sideways and in thirds sideways. Both ways produced better patterns. I use 1/3 of a fiber wad soaked in corn oil now and have good success with doves. I also...

    Morning exploration

Just be glad it's armadillos instead of wild (feral) hogs. The hogs would leave huge furrows that would really mess up your landing strip.

    Morning exploration

I went to a charity wild game cookout in Haines City, Fla. back in the '70s. The best tasting thing they had was "Hoover Hog". It tasted like young tender succulent pork. Later I killed one and was going to clean it and eat it when I saw that its blood was maroon-colored .. close to purple I...

    6-Pointer Today

The bucks in North Florida still have their antlers. South Fla. maybe not since the rut there is in August and Sept.

    1st Squirrel

Just tie a small bowline loop in the end and slip the other end in it to make a noose. Bowlines never slip. If you have more than one squirrel, you can make a carrier out of a wide piece of leather. Punch holes in the 2 short borders and thread a piece of cord through each hole after tying a...

    Am I color blind?

Although I see red/green normally (I think), I still use hydrogen peroxide and a Coleman lantern at night. I tried one of those night blood finders once and found that an incandescent flashlight worked better. I even bought a "Deer Finder" that was supposed to detect temperature changes and show...

    Am I color blind?

I didn't know that 4A batteries existed before this post. I googled it to make sure it wasn't a typo. As they say, you learn something new every day. :dunno:

    Am I color blind?

Although my son is color-blind, he was the art director for GAFF, a fishing magazine. He taught himself to recognize actual colors by asking co-workers what colors showed up. Essentially, he taught his brain a different "language" so that he now recognizes all colors even though he doesn't see...

    Am I color blind?

My son is red/green color blind. He sees various shades of green as orange to brown depending on the shade of green. Grass is orange and cedars are red. After he shot a deer, he walked up to me and said, "I guess I missed." I looked down and saw blood on his boots. I followed a very clear blood...
