    TC Hawken .54

My experiences with the .54cal, including the T/C Hawken, is limited to North Carolina whitetails and it's an excellent caliber for them. My personal 'opinion' however, is that given a choice I would reach for a .58cal / .62cal if I was going Elk or Moose hunting. And yes, I know, whitetails...

Conical bullet for hunting and target.

Other than starting out with T/C's .45cal/255grn Maxi-Hunters back in the 90's, I switched to PRBs and never looked back. When I first began getting some T/C Hawkens they had the standard factory 28" x 1:48" barrels on them. In range tests under same conditions one weekend, all three barrels...

Any reason to need a bronze bore brush?

I've used good quality bronze bore brushes all the time for years...after having one of the cheap crimped ones pull off down in the bore 10-15 years ago I threw them all out and got the ones with the twisted wire routed through the threaded attachment end. And have never let one pull off again...

    2014 NC Deer Season Results

My 2014 North Carolina Deer season was a good one until it got unexpectedly stopped short Thanksgiving week due to a foot injury. 1) November Fall colors and cool weather were beautiful as usual. I also saw the biggest buck of my lifetime moving slowly through thick trees about 50-60 yards...

Another Great Day in the Squirrel Woods

Amen...#6's might be fine out of a modern choked shotgun with shot cups and higher velocity...but my experience with bare bore unchoked MLs is that the larger/heavier shot pellets...at least #5's, even #4's...get the job done fine at 25-30yds.

Another Great Day in the Squirrel Woods

Sounds like a great day with lots of squirrels in that woodlot...minus 6...Congratulations!

My new (to me) TVM southern Flinter

Great gun JD...and yes, just ignore the resident anti-TVM troll. PS: If that gun gets oil on Mama's bed spread, she'll put a knot on your head, LOL.

    Turkey

I'm going to be set up to try and video a take down (if I'm lucky enough to even get a shot). But my instincts are telling me that doing it all by myself so I have to have the equipment inside the dry blind with me, means the muzzle blast / smoke is probably going to obscure the video's footage...

Disappointed with 54 cal round ball.

All I used for 15+ years were Hornady & Speer swaged lead balls which are 100% pure, and got pass-thrus most all the time...and after Hornady / Speer prices went thru the roof, I started switching some calibers to 100% lead cast balls from Eddie May in GA, and continued to get pass-thrus as a...

    2F or 3F for a .58

I've tried Goex 3F and 2F in 2 .58cal barrels: (100, 110, and 120grn charges) GM 32" drop in barrel in a T/C Hawken I had. Rice 38" barrel in my Early Virginia. Both granulations worked fine and both were accurate. But by an ever so slight margin the 2F seemed a hair more accurate. I like...

    28 gauge

Yeah, not with those little shot charges you're using. And my 28ga is just a plain cylinder bore...I don't try to abide by modern shot charges that benefit from modern plastic shot cups in modern choked barrels to eliminate bore wall damage and also hold a smaller charge together for more...

    The simple life

Well, 2 smoothbores actually...a .62cal(20ga) and a .54cal(28ga)...mainly want a second Flintlock on hand as a back-up in case a problem comes up with the other one during a hunting season or something. Given that all my hunting is in pretty heavily wooded settings with 25-50 yard shots the...

    The simple life

I've thanked you a number of times in the past and will do so again now, for your willingness and work that went into sharing / posting so much good information when I started down this road some years ago now...and the most rock solid helpful set of information was your article entitled: "The...

    28 gauge

FYI, there's and old saying for shot loads in ML smoothbores: "Load powder, more lead, shoots far, kills dead" I use that approach in my smoothbores and here are 25 yard examples of 60grns Goex and 100grn shot charges of 5's or 6's, and 90grns of 7.5's out of my 42" barreled .54cal smoothbore...

A different twist for 2015 hunting

Yes, plus, over years I've always taken the position as some others have that my 20ga smooth rifle (and 28ga) would handle all my Flintlock shooting & hunting needs and be the last type Flintlock I'd end up with...and would really want to keep both just to have a back up. I'll use the .50cal...
