    Pistol for edc?

At various times and places, I have carried BP revolvers and never felt at a disadvantage over cartridge revolvers. From my very first, which was a .36 brass framed Confederate (the real deal, not a reproduction, that I picked up for about $25 in a pawn shop.) to the one I have now, a .44 New...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

No mistake! I know the difference between a Roman Gladius (all styles) and Artillery swords. Also know the difference between a flintlock, cap lock (percussion), snaphaunce and most other types of rifle/musket ignition systems. No novice, here.

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

A person (claiming to know something about firearms) never hearing about the M2 variant of the M1 Carbine must have been hiding in a cave most of his life. In Viet-Nam, I got a hold of an M2. Handy little thing since I spent as much time behind the steering wheel of a truck as not. (Handier than...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

Living in Texas have visited the Alamo a time or two. On one such visit, I saw what was alleged to be the rifle that Crockett used at the Alamo. It was about 4-41/2 feet long percussion not flintlock. Plus, it appeared to be .32 caliber. A kids' rifle, in other words. Nothing Crockett would...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

Though not strictly a movie or a tv show, some of the History Channels' programs show reenactments of historical events. On one such, an even that occurred during the Civil War showed both Union and Southern troops carrying M1 Garands. Another reenactment showed WW2 American troops carrying...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

Had a friend, many years ago, BP hunting deer in Oklahoma, during 'Primitive Season.' Shot at an according to him, a 10point buck from a tree stand and missed. The buck ran about 20 yards, then stopped. Hoping for another chance, my friend was in the process of reloading, when the buck, out of...

How Often Did Historic Muzzleloader Get Cleaned

When I first began my adventures into cap&ball revolvers, I had some self-acclaimed expert tell me that I shouldn't keep my c&b loaded as black powder was corrosive and would cause rust to form in my chambers. Didn't sound right to me, so I checked with an old man who at 90, at the time, grew...

Some Eye Candy : Cimarron 1860 "McCulloch Colt" Anyone Else?

Have a 1860s reproduction with the full fluted cylinder. If a gun can be called 'sexy' or perhaps sinuous, this can. Don't know how rare these reproductions are but told someone I had one. Was told it wasn't possible because no one makes a reproduction.

    How do you eat them

First of all, I need to Google nothing! I grew up among people that were born in the 19th century and who lived well into the 20th. These people used grits, corn meal mush and other terms interchangeably, sometimes, even calling hushpuppies, corn dodgers. Even had an uncle, who was ancient by my...

    How do you eat them

I'm of the opinion that any time that you must 'doctor' something to make it palatable, you shouldn't be eating it in the first place. Grits ae nothing more than boiled cornmeal (cornmeal mush) which in itself began as a Depression Era meal. Every time I visited 'The South' and was served grits...

    Trade whiskey

When I saw the tag line 'Trade Whiskey' I thought WOW! REALLY? The comments I've read thus far aren't exactly what I expected. Had a good friend. sadly. long gone now, that prided himself in following Mountain Man traditions believing himself to be the spiritual heir of men like Jim Bridger and...

Let's See What Your Handgun Loading Stand Looks Like

Been into CB/BP revolvers for 30/40 years and except stands to reload loose cylinders haven't run across anyone/ANYONE that uses a stand to reload revolvers. Don't know about pistols, never done that. Of course, all the shooting I've done and those that I've hung out with over the years, has...

    To the older guys…

At this time in my life, I'm 76 and hoping for 80 as my dad lived to that age, (though he was in much better health than I) when contemplating my own mortality, I too worry about who will get my guns and such, having no family to leave the to. Recently, I broached the matter with my V.A...

    The Red Green Show

Watched the 'Red Green Show' many years ago, when it was done before a live audience. It was on a PBS station. And yes, it was probably the funniest/best show around. As far as I know, you can still go to their website and order merchandise.

    Leaving Rifle Loaded

Some time ago, on this forum, was laughed at for telling that a true 'old timer'(someone that grew up in C&B days) had told me that dripping wax over the nipples and capping over the wax would keep the powder fresh until needed. Now, NOW, another has said the same thing. YEA! For me and old...

    Not toys

A gun/firearm, be it cartridge or BP has a nasty habit of teaching to respect it when you get careless. Have gnarly scar down my leg from getting a little too casual with my 1911. Carried it on half cock, safety off and in a pocket. Was getting out of my truck, somehow the hammer spur got...

    Not toys

If an 'old timer' both in age, 76 and in C&B hand gunning, almost 50 years, can stick his nose into this conversation. I think the reason C&B revolvers are not taken seriously is because many states do not consider the to be firearms, but only dangerous weapons, along with knives, clubs and...

Blowing down the barrel youtube video

If I remember correctly, and at my age, 76, I sometimes question some of my remembrances. I've seen 'OLD' westerns where rifles using paper cartridges were employed in the movie. Every time someone fired the rifle, they would blow into the breech. Perhaps to extinguish any lingering embers from...

    Chainfires - the skinny? Maybe....

As stated on this forum before, grew up around and old, old man who used C&B revolvers, (in real life.) He always greased his chambers after loading. Said it cut down on fouling and ring fires. It did. Followed his advice and after firing hundreds of rounds from C&B revolvers, never had a ring...

    Lack of cylinder safety pins

My Uberti 1860, has safety notches between chambers, so hammer is not resting on a loaded chamber. Safe to carry 6 loaded. Back in the day, when I carried a .36 cal. Navy and other .44s, would rest hammer between loaded chambers even though there were no safety notches on cylinder. Have...
