    T/C Bore Butter?

I used it for years and recommended it and sold it for years. I would lube my patches by putting them in a ceramic bowl and put enough bore butter to saturate the cloth by microwaving them. You have to watch the time in the oven very carefully as the patches will turn brown and smoke if left in...

Anyone used 45 conical on deer?

I killed my first buck (with a ML’r) in 1978 with a TC .45 Hawkin loaded with a TC Maxie slug, 60 yd 1 shot kill. Changed over to RB&s later because my hand made custom rifles all had slow twist. I’m sure that combo will getter done.

    Flintlock .40 squirrel hunters

My son, best friend and I all hunted squirrels with .40s. Took head shots and were very successful (& had more fun than a man should have following a feist and reloading and priming running from tree to tree). 30 grains would print at 25 yda, deer load was 70. I've built several .36s lately but...

    Covered Wooden Bridge

I live just 3 miles upriver and will really miss having it there. No storms that night and no traffic crosses it anymore. Investigators are spending a lot of time there and most think a flammable was spread from one end to the other, all 240+ ft and flames started at about the same time.

Were all Turner Kirkland Kentucky's this handsome?

I appreciate your comments on the Dixie TN e strongest Gun makings mountain rifle. Turner contracted with Huston Harrison to design and provide blue prints on the rifle so they could be made in Belgium, later in Japan. I understand Huston later said if he’d known Dixie was going to sell as many...

    Synthetic powders

iThanks for the info, I wondered if it was still available & should have checked before posting. It was an interesting product because of it was the only synthetic black that flash in the pan would ignite main charge.

    Synthetic powders

I build, shoot & hunt with flintlockes and use black powder. My son lives in WY and hunts remote high in the mountains and goes in light and for 7-10 days at a time, I used to go with him and know how hard it is to maintain your flintlock in bad weather conditions. Several years ago I read...

    What did you do today

Wondering what the “wear plate” should look like to cover the ram rod hole that came out the bottom! Barrel inlet & ram rod groove good but a slight error in layout and a bent 48” drill did the deed. Bit was 8” inside lower fore stock so how bit bent is a mystery to me. Made and used that bit 20...

    Iron nitrate after stains

Never tried vinegar as it's an acid too and don't see how it could neutralize another acid. I never had any trouble with soda turning pores white or leaving any white residue and used Aquafortis in a solution of water and soda on my 1st 10 hard maple guns. I stopped using Aquafortis after my...

    Iron nitrate after stains

with a solution of baking soda or other base chemical to counter the acid that causes the green color. Sorry for the earlier mis-step on posting the incomplete reply.

    Hello from Eastern KY

Good luck with your dogs and squirrel rifle. I have 2 young feists now and had more fun hunting with a great feist (Buckley line) and .40 cal many years ago. It was more fun than a grown man should expect to have.

Why This Wood and Not That on 18th Century Rifles

Freddie Harrison had several nice sized planks of perrsimon at Friendship about 20 years ago. I handled several but didn’t buy any as I was building golden age then. Freddie said they took stain well and carved great, all were 1/4 sawn and had a good grain flow. Kinda wonder if Nathan has any...

    Flintlock Turkey gun...

I've used a 16 ga flintlock for many years with success and built several 20 ga and one 12 ga for customers. These were 42" bbl guns with no chock, the 12ga was a 36". In my opinion hunting Turkey's with a flintlock takes a fresh outlook on several things compared to modern guns. #1 is limiting...

    Muzzleloader Build Pictures

Shumway's "Geo Schreyer Sr & Jr Gunmakers of Hanover" shows clearly that #1, #5 & #35 have his signature carving behind pointed tangs. He used squared off tangs on about 30 rifles and double radiused 3 times.
