Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

The flintlock is the first quality rifle I bought. It was also a rifle that smoothed my way into black powder shooting. After I purchased the rifle, I was told that the previous owner included all the supplies I would need to get started. All these items (except for the cat) came with the rifle:

Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

Here are photos of the rifles we took to the range: The flintlock has a Douglas barrel. The mountain rifle was made by Al Anderson. When I bought it, it came with the Redfield Olympia peep sight. The previous owner was elderly, with bad eyes, and was permitted to use the peep sights. A...

Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

My son and I went out to the range last week. I brought along a flintlock that was the first non-commercial made muzzleloader I ever had. I also brought a percussion rifle made by a local fellow here in Colorado. My son brought a modern rifle and pistol that he wanted to practice with after...

WANTED 50 caliber barrel for Pedersoli Kentucky Pistol

I bought this Pedesoli Kentucky pistol sight unseen. It turns out that the previous owner had bored out the 50 cal barrel to turn it into a smoothbore. I would prefer having a rifled barrel, so I am in the market for a 50 cal Pedersoli Kentuck pistol barrel. Thank you, Ron Golden, Colorado

Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

I'm blushing , Al. Thank you, buddy. Al and I have shot together at a black powder range by an historic fort in Colorado. I didn't start my love of black powder muzzleloading until I was in my 60's. Al helped educate me in the ways of the traditional shooter.

Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

Your son has quite some resume! Shooting in the Colorado Olympics; flight training! I wish your son the best in his impressive endeavors.

Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

RicM, I can really appreciate that. It is fulfillment of a dream, mostly when you have the opportunity to enjoy the activity together. I no longer can go to the MMA academy and participate, but I can go to the range with my son. Even the drive to the outdoor range gives the chance for us to...

Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

I hope your boys come back and shoot with you, whether it be black powder or modern. I treasure the times when my son and I went to the range together. But our kids are their own people with their own interests. I understand that. After work, my son spends time in a mixed martial arts academy or...

Going Traditional Muzzleloader Shooting with My Son - a Pleasant Surprise

The Subject title may not seem very exciting, but it is to me. My son and I have gone shooting together since he was about 11 or 12 years old. He now is 40. But he never really had an interest in black powder firearms or shooting. My son works in a profession in which firearms are a tool, a...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Took two Ohio - Vincent style rifles up to a private, outdoor range. This could be the last of the opportunities to use this range as the county is going to terminate the lease to the club and build a public range there. It's a shame to close down the range, and therefore the club, after its 60...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

My muzzleloading activities today and each of the last several days are not very exciting. I have been cleaning and rust protecting my flintlocks, something I do at least once a year. Some health issues kept me off the shooting range for a while, so many of my muzzleloaders were not used for...

    Lack of younger shooters?

That is very helpful! Thank you for the information.

    Lack of younger shooters?

I've had the opportunity to take college-age students to both black and smokeless powder ranges. Until I retired, I was on the faculty of a more conservative-leaning engineering university. In class, I would use photos of my black powder firearms as demonstrations of the industrial development...

    Oxidized Balls.

You make some good points, doubleset. We still do have some exposure to mercury, such as its use in fluorescent lights and dental fillings. The toxic effects of mercury depend strongly on the chemical forms of the material. However, there was a fallacy associated with the use of mercury for...

    Oxidized Balls.

Mercury is very nasty! The mining workers in the late 1800s who volunteered to process the cinnabar mineral that contained mercury received much higher pay than regular miners. It wasn't long before their gums rotted, their teeth fell out, and they could only eat soup or soft mush. Then, they...

    Oxidized Balls.

Warning! This posting is going to be longggggg! First, I’ll note that I have worked in association with the mining industry all over the world and have dealt with mining-related toxic materials for about 3 decades. Some people seem to suggest that the toxicity of lead was an invention of...

    TC Hawken Cougar

I could have done without the Cougar medallion. A little patch box would have been nice. But that is just being a little picky.

    TC Hawken Cougar

I've been very pleased with mine. The premium wood used in my cougar is very appealing. I found mine in a pawn shop. It shoots well. It was in pristine condition, so I consider myself fortunate to have found the rifle.
