    replacement for TC bore butter

Used Wonder Lube for a couple decades before switching to pure bear grease. Still use WL in a couple rifles, at least until it is gone.

    “Dry ball”

The Duck Creek Bunch once held a timed trail walk where one of the tasks required you to dryball from your pouch, then get it out using primitive means. Everybody offered helpful suggestions at your expense, along with comments about your personal habits and possible ancestry. Once you got the...

    Ha! That would do it!

    CVA squirrel rifle

My wife assembled the .50 kit in the mid 90's. Never did anything with the .36 barrel as she found she could not close just one eye. It is still here somewhere. I will try to remember to ask where she got it. I'm guessing Ron Shirk's Shooter Supplies, but it's been 30 years.

    anti-gun USPS

A couple years ago I did a barrel swap with an up and coming builder. My 42" .36 GM for his 42" .40 GM. I shipped via USPS in a Sch 40 PVC tube I made up with a glued end and the other end screwed closed. Both caps had wood inserts and dense closed cell foam for protection. My package made...

WANTED Plainsman Rifle imported by Replica Arms, Marietta Ohio

Not the model I am looking for, unfortunately. I drove back and forth to work past Hockingport, OH where Mr. Brooks lived, for several several years and have a .52 Hawken style barrel of his. He was a local legend/curiosity in the area. Well known nationally though.

    Toe Plate on your rifle

Because there is someone in every thread who only wants things done his way. All of us have that weakness. My particular hatred is those brass or iron 1990 era rings on shooting bag straps. Never seen on originals, unlike toe plates, but I digress. Most of my shooters have toe plates to...

    Rough barn gun

Lovely work! If those holes are from powder post beetles you need to treat it ASAP. Years ago my Mom dragged home an antique that had them, stored it in the garage and it took YEARS to kill them off. I still empty everything every 2-3 years and retreat in case I missed some. Left unchecked...

    Weird Things

I think they forgot to glue them in, because I remember tiny priming compound hockey pucks rattling around in the tin with empty copper caps. Maybe check one of the cap making threads for what they use to secure the primer? I think I used the caps up in my ROA and have been using CCI (and...

    Weird Things

Early in my bow career I had a perfect 7-8 yard shot at a nice buck from a ground stand. Shot was perfect and I nailed a 2" sapling that jumped in front of my arrow at 5 yards. I swear that stick was not there when I shot. SMH.

    Weird Things

Remington caps were notorious for doing that in the early to mid 80's. I had a tin with 30 or so caps that did that. Never bought another Remington cap in the last 40 years.

    Flintlock Gunsmithing

Just a comment on straight bench chisels. I restore old tools when not crippled up. I buy 100 yo socket chisels at fleas and yard sales, usually under a buck, as long as the sockets are not bunged up. Takes 15 minutes to turn a replacement handle if needed and you have a chisel as good as...

    Could caps do this?

Man, I HATE it when a problem goes away as quick as it comes. If you don't know the cause it will just come back to bite your a** another day. Hope you figure out the cause!!

Thank you. I was thinking of bolting to a floor joist and maybe a middle leg later for rigidity.

    Bear Grease Question

I have rendered two bears taken from the same mountain behind my cabin in the Smokies two years apart. Processed both the same way with the same equipment. The first made lovely, bright white grease at room temperature and canned well in mason jars. The second made a yellow tinged oil which...
