    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Patterns changed for the squirrels in my little woodlot in the past three weeks. A couple weeks ago I was seeing up to 15 at the same time feeding off my deer feed. It was a bit ridiculous and I even tried to tease Ed with a pic. The last two weeks, especially, they've all but disappeared and...

    Misinformation on GB

One current listing is quoting $70 to ship. That is excessive for a TC. I buy/sell a fair number of TC MLs each year and I have never had to pay nearly that much. I buy boxes in bulk, 25 for $83 to my door. Rolls of bubble wrap, 700 feet for $11 to my door. If you are doing one-off sales...

Anyone else's gun like a very tight load ?

I have a PA Hunter carbine that seems to be silly accurate with 70 grains of Swiss 3F and a .018 pillow ticking patch. I know this is about to be blasphemous but it has a QLA, and loads with steady pressure and you cannot argue with the accuracy. If I can hit a 4" steel plate every time at 50...

    T/C Seneca .36 caliber

Second range day with my .36 at 25 yards. Tweaking the sight as I can't seem to trust my eyes one day to the next. 25 grains Swiss 3F and my first try at Dawn/water 25/75 mix on .015 patches with the .350 ball. First group was rather crappy as I tried 20 grains, but they tightened up at 25...

Anyone else's gun like a very tight load ?

I'll likely say this a few more times over the coming weeks... but ^^^^^^^ what olskool said. I took my .36 Seneca out earlier this week and fired 20 rounds using a 25/75 Dawn-to-water mix. I squeezed out each patch then laid them on a sheet of paper and folded that over to press the patches...

    WANTED Flintlock tools

I have used a larger/heavier paper clip for decades. It is wrapped around my pan charger lanyard. Works great. For the jaw screw, a small hex shaped 'screw driver' that my grandfather gave me in the early 90s. Much easier than a flat head because my top screw has a hole in it. That little...

    Piebald Doe

I've been watching a young buck this summer that has 3 or 4 inch white socks on all four feet and his inner leg white hair wraps outside onto his thighs. Nice looking deer all around. I've had at least one a year show a little extra but not excessive white, usually doe.

Thompson Center 50 cal Hawken Flintlock...polish or not?

You are in the $400-500 range, good clean/shiny bore and closer to $600. I would polish the brass. Why? Because you are already in a niche of a niche market. Polished brass, even to a dull but 'brass' look, will get you more money. Cleaner brass will give a better look and initial...

    RLO No-drill slings for Cherokee/Seneca - Thoughts/Experience?

Agree 100% The Cherokee and Seneca are hard enough to come by now and I would call them rare and they are special to those that have them. No way I'm drilling any of them. If I acquire one that has been, so be it. The Fiddleback CS was very helpful and although the guy I'm exchanging...

    Who carries a purse?

Historically speaking, it seems a purse has become socially linked to females but in reality, women's clothing had small/tiny pockets, if any. "Fashion" I suppose, who wanted coins and keys and such weighing down their 'hips' :) Anyway, that's one reason women have carried a 'purse'...

    CURIOUS ABOUT CONICALS

Rate of twist, rifling depth and powder volume... if PRB vs Conical in the same barrel, then you can compare more fairly. And the default claim of 'every barrel is unique' blah blah blah, which is absolutely true :) Conicals are going to be heavier in every caliber so you will have more foot...

    Who carries a purse?

EDC bags from Amazon, generally pretty cheap and lots of size options. Or my latest 'invention', a binocular case that I picked up last year for an elk hunt. This is an FHF FOB, pricey, but in my opinion it was well worth it and came with a lot of optional attachments. Easily mounts to a back...

    RLO No-drill slings for Cherokee/Seneca - Thoughts/Experience?

I agree, you make fair points. It is a bit more of I know what I don't want, so looking at alternatives. I am not crazy about the price when I can get two or three different options for the same money, but I'm not crazy about those options so I'm in a look, read, evaluate and decide...

    RLO No-drill slings for Cherokee/Seneca - Thoughts/Experience?

I could not find any direct reference to the RLO no-drill sling on any of the forums here. https://fiddlebackoutpost.com/collections/rlo/products/rlo-custom-leather-no-drill-harnessed-rifle-sling I am curious if anyone has used them or know of anyone who has tried them. I have a leather...

How far does spent patches go ?

I was amused for two reasons... I was firing about once every four minutes but it was really humid and barely any breeze so my smoke was hanging all around their stalls/tables....not sure who had the worse smelling powder though. With all their fancy "black rifles" and schmancy pistols at 25...

    T/C Seneca .36 caliber

JD... are you one of those anonymous "jerks" who outbid me via online auctions in the last week or two on some .36s??? :)

How far does spent patches go ?

If you're at the range and alone, 20-30 feet and lying right on top of the grass. If it's a busy day with other members, they land on edge and wiggle deep into the grass never to be found. Last Sunday morning I fired 20 shots... found three! It was a busy morning.

    TC Hawken Carbine

Well...... Now I have to go shoot some photos of this VERY topic... I ended up buying a pile of TC Hawken stocks, all factory seconds, about three years ago. I finally got around to messing with them. Most are between 70-90% finished but many have minor cracks, splits, or deformations of...

To Bounce or not to Bounce

I push until firm then another nudge but never bounce. Consistency matters and using wood vs brass rods will give entirely different outcomes with a bounce, and perhaps even a 'push' seating method. I load with a brass rod at the range and hunt with a Delrin rod. I am sure that Delrin will...
