Need some knowledge on rifling and barrels

That loose spot wouldn't happen to be under the sight dovetail would it?

Some Questions Regarding Percussion Sharps Rifles

Just my experiences... "Musket Matters" has a couple of very good vids on Youtube about making cartridges. You can make either the early ones that get the tail cut off when the block closes, or the later one that fits properly in the chamber and the fire flashes through the end. I prefer the...

    Bending the hammer

That's great except no other lock made that I have been able to find will fit that rifle. I would have to restock it if I wanted a better lock so I was kind of stuck working with what is available.

    Let’s talk about the F’s

I found 65 gr 2F shot better with those bullets in my '61 than lighter charges did. That skirt is pretty thick and even with the plug in the rear end it still needs a pretty good hit to get it to bump up and seal.

    Let’s talk about the F’s

My Volunteer has a fly in it as well. Maybe they stopped that after a certain point?

    Bending the hammer

Thanks. The rain finally stopped so I got to go outside and shoot it a bit. Works every time and is really fast now. That little change sure made a difference. And now after 25 shots the flint doesn't show any wear. Neat!

    Bending the hammer

I have been messing with a L&R replacement lock in my Dixie squirrel rifle for a number of years without any real joy. I've polished up everything inside, played with several frizzens and various hardening techniques, and nothing I had done made it any better than maybe 50% successful. The...

    spring flintlock pistol hunting

I have finally had good success hunting with my flint Kentucky type pistol. The carpenter bees are back in force, and it occurred to me to try a bit of aerial shooting. 25gr. of powder, newspaper wad, a big scoop of uncooked grits, and another wad on top has proven very effective on them. I was...

    Nock Volley Gun

That certainly makes a statement! Loading it would take some thought to make sure each barrel only got one load. And I thought a double was tricky if you didn't pay attention.

58 caliber compression projectiles info wanted

Works great in a 577 NE but musket pressures aren't high enough to get it to work.

58 caliber compression projectiles info wanted

I have a mold for those made by Moose. They shoot quite well in my P-H '61 and Miroku Springfield. 60gr 2f seems to be a good charge. Granted, I am not a skirmisher, and they may not work well at the lower charges those guys use.

    Whitworth

If you want some, papercartridges.com is swaging original Whitworth bullets now. The 500M ram silhouette makes a pretty good target, you can hit it regularly if you do it right.

Dixie Gun Works Moutain Rifle ?

That explains a lot. I did not know they were two different rifles. Mine is one of the high numbered Japanese ones.

Dixie Gun Works Moutain Rifle ?

If you go to buy it make sure they let you take the lock off and inspect it. I bought one of those in 32 caliber a number of years ago and the lock was completely worn out. Evidently they were not all that great from new. I got an L&R replacement lock for it, and have been futzing with that for...

    Houston, we have a problem...

Yep, pre lubed patches are usually a problem. Spit or something like Ballistol/water mix works a lot better. Each time you load should be cleaning the bore.

A brilliant way to adapt to modern realities. We'll likely see more things like that as time passes.

Thompson Center .56 cal Smoothbore ?

It's not hard to convert if you have a machine shop. You will need to buy or make a new flint breech plug, install, and finish it then use either a takeoff TC lock or an RPL lock from L&R. I have a Renegade I did that to, after getting it bored from 54 to 58 by Bobby Hoyt. I built it because I...
