    T/C 45

My Cherokee likes 60gr FFFg, a .445" ball and a .012" patch. Smaller balls and/or thicker patches and it won't shoot. The rifling is pretty shallow.

    Numrich Arms "boot pistol" question.

They seem to be bringing about $250 or so fully assembled in 45 caliber. I don't know about the 32s, I have never seen one so may be much more unusual.

    smoothie pistol question

OK, 5 inch barrel. I missed that part. Never mind my ranting...

    smoothie pistol question

I'd go maybe 30 - 40 grains of powder, don't want those shot to bounce off. If you have a 1/2 inch punch some cardboard wads will work well. 2 over the powder and one over the shot. At least that's how I loaded mine. Same dipper for powder and shot.

    flint skipping on frizzens

When I first got my TC flintlock, I didn't know much about lock geometry. As delivered it didn't work very well and destroyed flints very quickly. I heard about the upgraded parts TC had made, and got a cock and frizzen. That helped considerably but it was still pretty bad. Since then I have...

    Flint or percussion Choice

I like to use caplocks for rifles shooting conical bullets because the much higher pressures generated are pretty hard on flintlock vent liners. It does work, they just don't last long. Neither do nipples depending on what the load is. Just something to think about.

FOR SALE Dixie Gun Works SxS 20ga percussion shotgun FS

What's up with the muzzles? That looks like epoxy and metal chips. Was it shortened?

    Casting .310 Round Balls............

Lots of patience. After a long time of casting those it still looks like you haven't done much since the pile is small. A 6 cavity mold would be really nice.

    Hawkenized Thompson Center rifle

I've been thinking about doing that to one of mine, using a Pecatonica stock and Hawken Shop parts. Not only does it look way nicer but with the added drop in the buttstock it would handle and shoulder better. Nice work you did there!

    Looking at some rifles

My first flintlock rifle is a Dixie squirrel rifle, 32 caliber. I didn't pay much for it, and I am still learning things using it 20 years later. I've had to replace the lock, but the rest is still going strong. The thing about these rifles is they don't fit or balance very well. They certainly...

Where can we find percussion caps?

Powder Valley has them in stock now.

    Underhammer

Yep. Got one here in the safe, 45 cal. Fun little thing to play with and very accurate.

    Northern Neck of VA?

Likewise! She attends the church that is right there, and lives on Neenah Road right around the corner, about 1/4 mile away. That's pretty neat to have a place named after your family! It is kind of messed up by the new road though. Sort of confusing through there especially at night.

    Northern Neck of VA?

    Yep, I'm here occasionally.

    Is there such a thing?

I've done that also. They work in my TC Cherokee but not in the Dixie squirrel rifle. The TC has a much faster twist rate.

    Shiloh sharps 54 cal

I have a Wolfgang made rifle, that I traded a Pedersoli for. No comparison, the Ped was a real pain to use and the Shiloh is wonderful, it works like they are supposed to. I also make the flat base cartridges with Moose Guy France bullets. But recently Brett at Papercartridges has been showing...

    Sharps with loose powder

That is an idea. I've never tried shooting balls out of my Sharps. Do you wipe between shots to keep the barrel clean or have some other way to manage fouling? I have shot my rifle quite a bit with loose powder, when I have either been too busy or lazy to make cartridges. It works fine, just...

    Why 60 Grains?

And there is the issue of more powder making the recoil too lively as well as being hard on the musket.

    .72 caliber conicals

You guys shooting conicals in double rifles be careful and ram the second shot before firing it. I tried some and the recoil pulled the bullets a few inches forward in the second barrel. Between that and the lower velocity I decided to stick with patched balls. Besides, 535 grains at slightly...

    T/C Cherokee .45 cal.

My single trigger Cherokee has a nice trigger pull after I worked on the lock a bit. Stoned the engagement and used a lighter sear spring and it made a big difference. I agree on the loads, 60 grains is all I want to use in mine. It's accurate there and I don't see the need to stress it unduly.
