Advice about a crack in the stock ?

I have repaired dozens of cracked stocks this way over the last 20 years of doing this stuff. Not one of them broke later. If old time gunsmiths had access to it they wouldn't have had to use metal plates to repair breaks. And yes, CA glue works for this as well especially on small pieces that...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Started working on tuning up the L&R replacement lock on my Dixie rifle. Thing never has worked right since I got it, it would be a neat rifle if it would go off every time. Hopefully I can get it to that point.

Advice about a crack in the stock ?

If you used very thin epoxy and successfully got it in there (I like to use an air nozzle to blow it into cracks) that should be the strongest part of the whole stock. Though it's a good idea to clamp it as the epoxy cures so you can sand it out and the repair will be invisible.

Wanting to get a Percussion Rifle cant make a decision

For shooting deer I would choose a .577" military type rifle or a roundball gun. The Whitworth is a heavy and very finicky thing to try to use out hunting, best kept on the target range. My own Parker Hale '61 musketoon makes a superb deer rifle, light and easy to carry and has a fast follow up...

    Long Range Calibers

With a 1:15 twist I doubt you will be terribly impressed by your new rifle at 1000 meters. You are going to be firing bullets up to about 310 grains, which will fly well to 500 yards but are going to likely be a lost cause at 1000. Most silhouette shooters using 38s will go with 1:12 barrels and...

David is spot on - what do you want to do with your rifle? All the ones you listed have very different performance.

Fired off an E-mail to Pedersoli......

I would think that going through Dixie, Cherry's, or The Italian Firearms Group would be more productive than trying to get anything directly from Pedersoli especially if you are in the US. I have not found them to communicate much in English.

    Paper patched bullets

That book is more geared toward shooting PP with smokeless powder in cartridges. For black powder, might I suggest "Loading and Shooting Paper Patched Bullets" by Randolph S. Wright. It focuses on black powder cartridge rifles but the concepts of bullets patched to bore and wad stacks carry...

I need the Pritchett .550 Base Plug mould from NOE

So do I. There is a group buy thread going over on the NOE forum, go ahead and add your name to it and maybe they will run some when the list gets big enough.

    Paper patched bullets

.010" thick paper would be incredibly thick, like tablet backer. More like .0015" thick or so. Most patching paper will add .006" to .0012" with four thicknesses (two wraps). I also use some ancient 9# onion skin I picked up in a thrift store. Seth Cole still makes it but it's kind of hard to...

    Another Walker thread

Used a depth mic and measured the end of the arbor to the frame, and the depth of the hole in the barrel. My first spacer came out at .092" and it still didn't work. Made another one right at .096" and it's perfect just like the measurements said it would be, as a sanity check.

Leather dye for stock staining ?

I have used it on quite a few guns that had beech or birch stocks. It works quite well and will penetrate where other stains will not. After a heavy coat the wood will have a green tint to it. I then wipe it back with a rag soaked in isopropanol until it is the color I want then apply finish. I...

    Pedersoli Trade Gun

That is a neat place, you feel like you have stepped back in time 60 years or so. The old mill over there is very interesting. I ride my motorcycle all over there exploring when the weather is warmer.

Felt patch under flat bottom bullets

I use hard card wads in my Volunteer. Both to protect the base of the bullet and to protect the powder since I clean the bore down to the wad every shot, before seating the bullet. I haven't seen any advantage to a felt wad.
