    Loading flintlock for a hunt

More good advice. Thanks. Mine is a lefty gpr in 54 cal. I had my gunsmith polish the lock components and while he was at it he polished the pan face and cover to get a tight fit. I’ll probably wait until I get to my spot and prime at shooting light, then check it periodically, especially...

    Loading flintlock for a hunt

In my percussion gun, I snap a cap, load it up like normal, tape the muzzle and hunt all week if needed. I don’t cap it until I’m ready to shoot unless I’m setting up for calling. This is elk hunting in Colorado. I have some questions for my flintlock. I’m assuming I’ll want to keep the pan...

    54 cal Elk Load

Got back to the range and started at 75 yards. Started with 80 grains 3f (switched from 2f), raised the group about 1.5”. Group size about the same as 2f. Patches looked the same, maybe a little better. Went to 90gr 3f, raised the group another inch. Group size the same, maybe a bit better...

    54 cal Elk Load

What do you guys recommend for an over wad? Do you put it down just in the muzzle then patch/ball right on top and drive it down all at once? I’m running out of time if I need to order some wads. TOW has some dry felt wool wads in 54 cal I could order, or I could try the craft store and cut...

    54 cal Elk Load

This is all good info and advice. Yep, same day of shooting. I also get fatigue after a while and it can for sure be an issue, especially with my eyes even though I have great vision. The target with larger groups was earlier in the day, the four shot group was later when I decided to go back...

    54 cal Elk Load

Thanks. This thread was about finding an accurate load with enough energy with my flintlock (my other muzzleloader is exactly the same gpr but percussion). I’ve killed a pile of elk with my 300 win mag so recoil isn’t a factor for me. The flintlock was just losing accuracy at higher charges.

    54 cal Elk Load

Thanks, this is good advice. I don’t think that’s burn through though, it looks like tearing from sharp rifling. It gets better after each range session.

    54 cal Elk Load

My grandfather says “minute of elk vitals, send it”.

    54 cal Elk Load

Thanks brewer. I’ve hauled around my percussion GPR on two hunts with no issues. Killed a couple baby bulls...ya know...easier to pack out when you’re by yourself :). I think most of my question is answered that I need to quit worrying about it and go with the 80 grain 2f load that’s...

    54 cal Elk Load

Thanks. I suppose I’m just second guessing my killing power should I need to stretch out to 100 yards. I’ll see what I can get with 3f knowing I can stick with my 2f 80 grain if needed.

    54 cal Elk Load

This was a mix of 90 grain shots and 85 grain shots. I can’t remember what was what but groups with the same charge we’re not good.

    54 cal Elk Load

This was my 80gr four shot group at 75 yards.

    54 cal Elk Load

Not sure what’s what but some of these were at the higher powder volume

    54 cal Elk Load

Thank you sir. I might try a few groups with 3f but not spend much time on it if it isn’t obviously better. It sounds like my 80gr 2f load will be enough and it’s accurate. I welcome other opinions from the group.

    54 cal Elk Load

Shooting was all at 75 yards. The changes I was making was in powder volume, not yardage. The group opened up quite a bit when increasing powder from 80 to 90 grains. I tried 85 grains and the group was better than 90 grains but still not as good as 80 grains.

    54 cal Elk Load

I’m shooting a Lyman GPR flintlock in 54 cal. Shooting .530 roundball with mink oil lubed .018 pillow ticking patch. I got good groups at 75 yards with 80 grains 2f Goex, but when I tried 90 (and 85), my groups opened up. My last two bull elk were shot at 90 yards with the same gun but...

SOLD Lyman Great Plains .54 Flint "Left Hand"

I wish I didn’t “buy one” earlier this year or I’d be all over it. I couldn’t find one and had to buy a 50 cal then swap the barrel with the only 54 cal replacement barrel I could find.
