    TC New Englander puzzle

Thank you! I’m probably shy on snapping caps because of the difficulty getting them. I try hard to shoot at least once a week and I’m working thru a batch of musket caps on the NE and looking at the mod for 209 primers. But that’s a ways off. Thank you again.

I’m with you on the one thing at a time. Moose milk I assume you mean Ballistol. I use a 4:1 ration for final cleaning and I’ll try that this coming Wednesday. Thanks for the feedback!

    TC New Englander puzzle

You might be correct, I’m cleaning after two shots because of black powder residue. Typically with Pyrodex I did not clean until after 5 shots. My patches are lightly lubed with crisco, are you suggesting more lube?

I think #1 is out because The first shot after cleaning was fine, and definitely not the nipple, I cleaned it and it still misfired. I think it’s haunted.

In my quest to change from Pyrodex RS powder to Goex FF in this rifle I come across a problem with the Goex not encountered before. It’s a little complex but will bullet point my last trip to the range. I shoot two shots (patch and ball) Clean barrel with spit patch followed by two dry...

    Grains by weight or volume???

Most tube type volume measuring tools are calibrated for Goex FF, so a volume setting of 70 will get you 70 grains of Goex FF, but only 56 grains of Pyrodex RS. Does this mean both powders create the same muzzle velocity @ the measured 70 grains volume of Goex and Pyrodex? thanks Bunk….I think...

    Grains by weight or volume???

This topic intrigues me and I admit I do not understand how volume is the target. I liked shooting Pyrodex and recently started using Goex FF. By volume they are different when measured as grains (weight). So I charted it out and to me the difference is dramatic. UNLESS Goex and Pyrodex at the...

    Pawn Shop Blasphemy

I could not agree more. Make it a project rifle and have fun with it. It might not be a “classic” BP rifle when your done with it but it will be shootable and safe.

Scope Mount For A Octagon Barrel

Drilling and tapping mounting holes on my muzzle loader was easy for scope mounts. I target shoot frequently putting 10-20 shots down range. There was enough barrel heat generated that the screw holes expanded ever so slightly, allowing the recoil to turn the screws. Tried blue then red Loctight...

    0.25 stainless shot.

Makes a lot of sense, thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

    0.25 stainless shot.

Novice question: I have a 12 ga New Englander that I normally shoot lead shot. A friend gave me a bag of 0.25 stainless balls used for slingshots. I’m wondering that if I shoot these in my NE without choke would I damage the barrel??

    New Englander

I have a follow up question about the 12 ga. Someone gave me a bag of 0.25” steel balls used with sling shots. Would it be possible to load/shoot on the 12 ga without damaging the barrel?

    Grains by weight or volume???

The method I use to insure consistent loads is to mark my range rod after loading the first shot and all loads following should be very close to that load mark.

    Stuck ball extraction

My latest black powder challenge is a stuck mini ball that I could not pull out with a screw type ball retriever. I came across this video which gives me hope. After swamping the powder load I’m going to give this a try. Please let me know if this is a good/bad approach.

    New to Goex

I’ve been shooting BP rifles for a few years now and mainly using Pyrodex RS powder. Yesterday I decided to use Goex FF powder with my New Englander 50 cal. Things were going smoothly and when loading my 4th shot it was nearly impossible to get mini down the tube. It was lodged tight midway...

    Goex, back in business

Black powder weapons are not good combat weapons against AR and semi auto weapons. Where they are important is sustaining life AFTER a major catastrophic event that may not be corrected for years. In such a case they can provide food for the family. In your hoarding, don’t forget matches, water...

    New Englander

Couldn’t agree more. I have the 50 cal and 12 ga barrels, the 50 shoots beautifully and I’m still working on understanding the shotgun use in general. I think my 12 ga will accept a choke but I read that most folks don’t use them due to the need to remove in order to reload. At any rate my next...

    New Englander

I went to the range yesterday with my 50 cal New Englander and shot 3” five shot group at 50 yards. 80 gr Pyrodex RS, wad over powder & 360 gr maxi balls. I was shooting from a sitting position, range does not allow standing, but most recently the change I made that considerably improved my...
