Question about self priming and unreliable ignition.

A few quick suggestions: before your first loading of the day pour a small amount of denatured alcohol down the barrel followed by a dry patch. Blow out the barrel with compressed air if available. This will ensure you have an oil free breech. When dropping your powder charge settle the charge...

    Brass Frame 1851s

I don't believe Mike doe's the chamber chamfer. I offer it in addition to other services. The loading port can be opened up as well depending on the manufacturer and how material is there to work with.

    Dropped Dragoon?

Won't know till I see it for myself. Most of the Dragoons and Walkers I've had come across my bench had a slight chamfer as a forcing cone. And yes I do have the stuff to correct it.

    Brass Frame 1851s

Two points to be made, Using 457 balls puts more stress on the arbor where it screws into the brass frame during loading, has the arbor been properly seated into the barrel socket? If not at least correct it. Chamfering the cylinder mouths so they swage the ball into the chamber rather than...

New Favorite Gun: Ruger Old Army – WOW!

Another way is to pack the innards with hi temp wheel bearing grease. Cleanup becomes much easier, clean the barrel and cylinder as usual, wipe down the frame, good to go, Detail strip once a year, re grease and go for another year.

    Dropped Dragoon?

Yes indeed. How in the world would you chuck it in a drill press? You could send over to me and have me go through it and fix it right. PM me if you are interested.

New Favorite Gun: Ruger Old Army – WOW!

I've haven't put mine on paper but I have achieved minute of jackrabbit at around 75 yards. I been using a semi wadcutter for a .45 ACP. The bullet is knurled between 2 crosscut files so they will fit the Ruger chambers. Enough Pixie dust in the chambers to seat the bullet just below the chamber...

    Dropped Dragoon?

recently worked on one, terrible workmanship on the arbor and internals. Plus it had a huge rifle sight stuck on it.

What do you guys lube your C&B revolvers with?

My problem with this video is he still insists on cutting a ring off the ball. With a 5 degree reamer one can open up the chamber mouth just enough to swage the ball into place and still have it be good tight fit without shaving lead off the ball. I have yet to see any documentation from Colt...

    Load filler?

Never used filler, can't see the point in blowing food down the barrel, used or otherwise. If I want a filler it's a thick cardboard wad.

    Load for Uberti Walker Revolver

And once again we are hearing from an armchair expert. I will take Mikes suggestion about the wedge fit and my own experience over a guy that obviously doesn't understand the platform. Maybe Mr. Deland should stick to working on something other than percussion revolvers.

    Destroyed patches

For the burnt patch problem try a pinch of hornet nest material over the powder. I've tried it, it works.

Ardesa Spain .50 caliber flintlock touch hole liner size

I wouldn't pull it. Check the size of the hole, a drill bit shank is one way. I like my touch hole size to be around .070. Gives good fast reliable ignition, just don't stand next to it when it goes off.

What Mike said! Plus set it up right! Like Mike said.

    Dropped Dragoon?

Nope, That's not normal at all, never seen anything quite like it. It may be salvaged by cutting a forcing cone and getting rid of a lot of that big gap. Most Walkers and Dragoons have a small chamfer instead of a proper forcing cone. This one is looking more and more like a wall hanger.

What do you guys lube your C&B revolvers with?

trying 50/50 beeswax and tallow. After the mix hardens use a 1/4 teaspoon measure and scoop up enough to roll into a little pill. When you load the revolver take the pill and squish it into the chamber over the ball, no fuss no mess. I made up a small container full the other day so they are...

    Load for Uberti Walker Revolver

I am not sure what kind of stuff Mr Deland works on but maybe it would be best if he sticks to more modern designs cause he sure as heck doesn't understand the open tops.

    Load for Uberti Walker Revolver

Yes it does. Once the pistol is set up properly it will last you a lifetime. When the flat combination spring is replaced with torsion springs the reliability goes way up. The open top platform is a very strong and solid system when it's done right.

    Load for Uberti Walker Revolver

So if I am getting this right you are basically doing a press fit on the wedge in thickness? And using a feeler gauge each time you assemble the revolver? This is the same B.S. that Uberti tried with a "fix" for the arbor problem by making the arbor fit so tight you needed a mallet to get the...
