Still very elementary, but I'm happy with it. I used maple scales,pinned with plain steel nails, and boiled up some walnut shells for stain. How did they seal wood back in the day, with bees wax, or did they just stain it with no sealer?

Thank you, next question: had some ignition problems today. Got this rifle used, and it has a very rough frizzen--the flint strikes an area that is very scored, almost looks like a washboard. It destroyed the flints. Should it be resurfaced with sandpaper, or replaced entirely?

Cliff, the plug is aspen that had been attacked by bark beetles. Sadly the log was mostly decayed so I was able to salvage only small pieces. By trial and error I have learned how to stabilize small pieces with epoxy and or CA. To Everyone, thanks for your comments and advice. Got another...

It is airtight under a lot of pressure. I cut the threads very carefully and left a bevel so it seals up when screwed in tight. Also after cutting the threads I hardened them and built them up with CA, then put a little wax on them to keep it operating smoothly.
