Jedidiah Smith Documentary

Well seeing as how you brought it up Mike... GREAT JOB! :hatsoff: and big Conrgrats. I get a kick when they do shows on our area of interest and get some people who actually live and breathe it so to speak like you and Rex. Overall all, the commentators on that show rank topnotch among the...

Zonie, and I met today at the Western National

I was told it was built by Andy Lund but the paperwork said Andy Larson so I guess my statement may not be totally correct, I don't know Andy Larson.

Zonie, and I met today at the Western National

They did have a raffle for a semi custom rifle (Chambers kit, assembled by a local guru) along with accourterments made by local craftsmen and fellow board members. There was also a raffle for a $3000 hunting trip to Alaska that you could cash out on if you wanted... not sure why anyone would...

Zonie, and I met today at the Western National

You should have gone back on Sat. Friday was a dim day for sure but Sat they place was hopping. I didn't vist the range but Traders row was packed full of people. I noticed as well a number of "tourists" or people that don't do either much shooting or re-enacting as far as I could tell. My...

    Making a forge

I was planning on using some I-beam that I have. At least until I get to the point I either decide I don't really want to pursue blacksmithing any further or decide that I have to get the biggest best... :hmm: just what I need....another hobby. :shake: (that's my wife in the background by the...

    Making a forge

How come no rocks? Not to be to big a cheap skate but I have about 4 bags of pre-mix not doing anything right now. I could sift the rocks out if that would work.

    Making a forge

Thanks guys, I haven't actually tried a real masonary store yet, and I know of some fireplace stores that I can hit as well. The plans for the washtub forge looks like it might be a good alternative. Here's the one I am thinking of working off of. Forge Link

    Making a forge

I found an article about making a homemade forge I was thinking about giving it a whirl for some small tool tinkering and maybe even give knife making a try. My question is the article calls for fire bricks to be used. What are fire bricks and where can they be had? I've asked around a little...

    Hunting Shows

Well as was said in a few posts I would think that if the companies spent a little and did a few shows that demonstrated that the "old guns" still work just fine and effectivley harvest animals it might help the overall sales and take some of the wind out of a certain individual that is stirring...

    Hunting Shows

While being couch ridden this weekend I re-newed my expertise in channel flipping much to the dismay of my family. While doing so I was hitting the outdoor channel on many occasions and partially watched a few hunting shows. They didn't really hold my attention because they were mostly using...

    strike-a-lite bag

I think Russell mentions carrying a bag on his belt with pipe and fire fixins to light it. He may of had another kit somewhere else but there is documented evidence that they carried some fire starting stuff on the belt.

    Longrifles

I used to feel that way about a rifle that I have. Granted it's not $2500 but it is definatley in the upper in of what I could afford. It spent a lot of time in the closet being my "Pride and Joy". After a number of years I'm taking it into the woods trekking and enjoying it for what it is...

Range Report: 9/16" Marbles in .58cal - Shockingly Accurate!

Based on your expierments Roundball I'm thinking wheelweights would be a good target round. I know this has been discussed before but for the cost of lead and ease of getting the weights...

The Peacemakers by R. L. Wilson

I got it a few years ago from the inlaws. Other than their daughter, it's the best thing I've gotten from them. It's worth the price for the pictures alone. I think some of the writing leaves a little to be desired but overall very worth it.

    White Leather???

If it is a suede type leather you can smoke it yourself and have some good looking leather. I did that with some deerskin that was white, they took the smoke really good and are often confused with real braintan.

Thanks for the desccriptions, I've seen them but never stopped to really flip through them.

Plainsmen Series by Terry C Johnston

What's the time period of the series and does it follow along (loosley) with some true events like the Scratch series?

    crazy crow -oil cloth

Thanks for the info guys. I've seen references before to using the oil sheeting but I have not ever found an early reference to an actual "sleep sack" set up. I think most of the mountaineers wrapped up in whatever they used to cover their pack saddles, as long as the plews were covered first...

    crazy crow -oil cloth

Has anyone seen any period reference to one of those sacks? I use one and love it, but I want to try something more "correct" if it exists.

    First Center-seam Mocs

That is really neat, it kinda goes to show there are only so many ways to do something... that works anyway.
