    HOW DO YOU CARRY YOUR'S?

For shooting at the range I use a tuna fish tin with a plastic lid. The cut patches are kept in the tin with some lube squirted in the plastic lid. I'll smear about a dozen patches in the lube and just pick them out when needed. For strips of patching material I lube the entire strip which I...

Your best deal acquiring a muzzleloader, either trade or purchase

About seven or eight years ago I was at a local gun show and spotted a CVA Hawken cap lock in .50 caliber sitting behind a booth. I asked about it and for $75.00 took it home. It must of been a kit that was slapped together because the trigger was rubbing on the inletting and the finish was...

    Pistols

Midway is having a sell on the Traditions Kentucky pistol kit right now. Just got a flyer in the mail today.

    parlor pistols

They make me think of the scene in "The Thin Man" when he shoots Christmas balls off the Christmas tree with a B B gun. Nice collection thanks for sharing.

    Bear pistol

Here's one I just finished with a 11 1/2 inch smooth bore in .50 caliber. I had an old lock from a 60's Japanese flintlock pistol kit sitting around which I turned into a cap lock and the barrel was turned out of 7/8 inch stainless round stock. It shoots just fine but I need to work out a better...

    Barrel wedge DIRECTION

I always go left to right. Had a right to left wedge push loose once when I put the rifle down on it's left side which pushed the wedge out just enough to come loose.

    Black Powder

Yes you can make your own BP but there is a steep learning curve and to get home made BP to match commercial stuff takes a lot of effort along with a fair amount of danger if you don't pay attention to detail. I've made some because it was on my bucket list but recommend just going out and...

SOLD .50 CVA Mountain Rifle w/Douglas Barrel

Just wondering if the lock is marked on the back with a number that would also be found written on the stock in the barrel channel. I picked up a CVA Mountain rifle last year and it was marked that way with what probably is an assembly number. Your's is in nicer shape than mine.

Percussion lock rifle for new shooter

Don't forget to add in about another $100.00 to your budget for accessories and neat stuff that goes with your rifle ;). I've had success with an older CVA Hawken cap lock in .50 caliber I picked up for cheap but it needed a bit of tweaking to shoot right.

Can a CVA Bobcat be converted to Flintlock?

From what I've heard the Bobcat is the same as a Frontier except it has a plastic stock while the Frontier is wood. I picked up a Frontier in .50 caliber and have compared the lock to the ones on the Traditions Kentucky pistols, I have both a cap lock and a flint lock Kentucky pistol and it...

    Surprise!

I picked up an older CVA mountain rifle cap lock last year at Alifia in Florida. Been looking for one for a while and this one had the four screw patch box but no ram rod or butt plate, still grabbed it, the price was right. Took it home and ran a cleaning rod down the bore and heard a soft...

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

Instead of calling the work you are doing on the pistol a restoration how about calling it a deep cleaning, might get the purists off your back LOL. I would leave it alone if it was mine but I have a tendency to fix it broke when I work on something like your pistol. What you are attempting is...

    Flash Cups

I'm a lefty shooting right handed cap locks and use them to help keep the cap flash from hitting my right wrist during a shoot. A piece of towel wrapped around my wrist does the same thing. Not saying I'm found of them but they keep the flash off the wood if you are shooting an expensive fire...

    Rendezvous results

Great shooting, congratulation on the first. The best I've ever gotten was a sixth place on the 100 yd paper shoot with 42 people competing. I did it with a beat up CVA Hawken .50 caliber cap lock which cost me a whole $75.00.

Just a show of hands, how many make their own ammution?

Been casting for both muzzle loaders and modern center fire guns for years. Also have been making my own black powder just to prove I can.

    Clean out screw on a T C

I've used a Harbor Freight hammer impact screw driver on some stuck side drum screws after buggering up my share with a regular screw driver. Sometimes there is a need to pull one and the impact screw driver hasn't failed me yet.

    CVA Mountain Rifle

Buy it and don't look back. I picked up one as a basket case missing the butt plate with a stuck load in it for $125. I cleared out the load and replaced the butt plate, it's a good shooter, $200.00 for a complete Mountain Rifle is worth it.

Share some of your fun toys

They are all .50 caliber and the only one that was a kit is the field piece with the wooden wheels., think it was made by CVA. The big field piece in the back was a flea market find which appears to of been made back around 1860 by Strong Fire Arms. Most of the rest I spun out on my old South...
