    WD-40 Test

I've used it as a solvent to help spread heavier oil while cleaning a firearm for long term storage. I've also soaked a bore with WD40 after a shooting match for a little protection till I can do a proper cleaning. Not saying it's the cat's meow but it has it's uses.

Question on a CVA .50 pistol

Cotton Tee shirts or an old cotton sheet works great for patches and cleaning at the end of the day with soapy water. Don't know what you have on hand but you will need a .50 caliber cleaning jag or some way to swab out the bore. I use Bore Butter on my patches but there are a lot of other...

Question on a CVA .50 pistol

All the single triggers on my CVA guns are brass with a curve trigger, not hooked or anything fancy. Think they used that design on the small pistol locks without a fly or bridle. Even the Frontier rifle has a trigger and lock assembly that could be interchanged with the Kentucky pistol if...

Question on a CVA .50 pistol

I've a CVA Kentucky pistol in .50 caliber with a loose trigger. I"m not sure if your Mountain trigger is the same but mine has a pin through the trigger's pivot hole which is held down with a "U" shaped clamp and a screw. I used a larger size pin made out of a cut down nail which took up most of...

Where do you guys get your flints? (In America)

I picked up about 20 lbs of a yellow flinty chert at a rendezvous about six years ago. It's all in chunks and pieces but still produced usable flints that work as well as any store bought ones. They aren't pretty but they spark a good 35 times before needing dressing or pressure flaking. Haven't...

    Miroku flintlocks??

I've a Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter .58 caliber which I picked up at a pawn shop about three years ago as an $140.00 impulse buy. It came with a bunch of supplies along with a powder horn half full of black powder. Think it was made back in '72 and has a peep site on it. Shoots better than I can...

What mini lube works best for U?

I've used 50/50 bees wax and olive oil. I heat the mix in a shallow pan and dip the skirt of the minnie ball into it up to the lube grooves. pull it out and let it cool sitting on a metal surface. When shooting I jamb the minnie ball down the bore shaving off any extra hardened lube with the...

    Miroku flintlocks??

I have a Miroku .69 caliber pistol from around the 70's. It's more of a pirate gun with a Kentucky style grip and Brown Bess flintlock on it. It came with a very soft frizzen which I couldn't get to spark no matter how many times I heated and quenched it. Ended up purchasing a Siler large rifle...

Percussion caps and other supplies during the last shortage?

I've seen the loose primer pellets with Remington #11 caps also. They were probably 25 years old and came with a Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter I picked up at a pawn shop. The ones that still had the primer compound present worked just fine. Using rifle or pistol primers is pretty easy I've been told...

Percussion caps and other supplies during the last shortage?

Well my stockpile probably wouldn't last a serious shooter more than a few months but I'm at the rate I shoot I'm good for a couple of years :)

Percussion caps and other supplies during the last shortage?

Couldn't find #11 caps anywhere during the last drought along with .22 ammo and boxer primers. I've stockpiled enough caps and primers to carry through another shortage and have learned to make my own BP if necessary.

To Polish the Brass Furniture or Not?

I will polish when I first get the gun then let it age and get a patina.

    Repro 1863 Remington "Zouave" problem.

I've found that with some guns if the lock bolts are tightened too tight they will protrude through the lock plate just enough to rub on the inside of the hammer causing it to jamb. I've seem it mainly with locks that have two mounting screws like the Traditions and CVA locks. It's kind of a...

    Zouave, good and bad.

Past up on one made by Navy Arms two years ago. It was in good shape but I just didn't have the cash handy at the time. Ended up with a Navy Arms Buffalo hunter for $140.00 which is pretty much the same but a carbine that's in the Hawken style. They were in the same shop and must of been from...

    BP Substitute Questions

Since the pyrodex was free I'm not looking the gift horse in the mouth and will just shoot it and enjoy. Have plenty of real black powder on the shelf which I'm saving for competition shooting and have a couple of pounds of home made waiting to be used also.

    Buying A Used MuzzleLoader.

When I visit pawn shops I'll make a ridiculously low offer for a muzzle loader if I'm interested in it. Most of the time the pawn shop has a minimum they will take and will pretty much laugh you off or counter offer. Either way it becomes a bidding game, just don't act too hungry for the gun...

    Non Wipers Only.

I've been using Bore Butter with pillow ticking and a .490 round ball in my CVA Hawken and don't wipe between shots. I pretty much saturate the patch with the lube along wit a little spit or water and have shot about 30 times before noticing a little crud buildup about a 1/4 of the way down the...

    Buying A Used MuzzleLoader.

I've picked up a couple pawn shop guns with mixed success. One was a CVA Frontier side lock in .50 caliber for only $50.00. It was dirty but unfired with some of the original manufacturing debris still in the barrel. It's worth that alone for parts and shoot well now that I've cleaned it up...

    BP Substitute Questions

I'm happy with the trial shooting I did last weekend and didn't noticed any real difference except for having a slightly different report and smell. Guess it was loud enough, my new neighbor who has just bought the undeveloped lot next to me and had her 12 year old kid running an ATV along the...
