    BP Substitute Questions

I've a mix of both flinter and cap lock pistols and rifles for my front stuffers so the pyrodex isn't going to be wasted. I'm not a true purist and will shoot what ever comes my way but will stay in period when re enacting. Having a large supply of pyrodex just means more time at the local range...

    BP Substitute Questions

Grafs has been my go to for powder and caps. Placed an order last year for 6 lbs of Goex and a box of 1000 #11 caps. The local gun store sells the same CCI caps at $12.95 per tin of 100 while Graf's had them for $49.95 per thousand, that and the cheaper prices on BP made the order well worth it...

    BP Substitute Questions

Finally got the time to burn some pyrodex in a .50 caliber Kentucky cap lock pistol this afternoon. I grabbed a jug of RS and loaded up 25 grains under a PRB. Also loaded up 25 grains of 2F holy black for comparison. First thing I noticed is that it sounds different, more like a crack not a boom...

    BP Substitute Questions

I've been told that Pyrodex doesn't work with a flintlock unless you load about 5 grains of black powder first under the pyrodex load and reduce the pyrodex load by that amount. Haven't tried it so take what I say with a grain of salt.

    BP Substitute Questions

Thanks, the guy who gave me the Pyrodex said he tossed three more jugs which had clumps :(. Hope he at least used it on his lawn. I'll move some over to a smaller container for shooting and keep the open jug sealed to keep it from picking up moisture. My local range is only 15 minutes away so...

    BP Substitute Questions

I checked the jugs and they are a mix of both 2F and 3F equivalent. All the jugs are still factory sealed and I'm not planning on opening them till I need to use them. I'll try the 2F in the Hawken and 3F for the pistol. Been using Bore Butter as a patch lube and plan to keep using it for now...

    BP Substitute Questions

I was given 8 one pound jugs of Pyrodex along with another six cans of black powder and am interested in using the Pyrodex in my .50 caliber Hawken cap lock for fun shooting. Been shooting black powder for a while and am curious as to what load I should start with using the substitute. I would...

    Traditions clean out screw

I've always removed them, cleaned up the threads and used a good anti seize lube when reinstalling them. I remove both the nipple and bolster screw for cleaning and have some not period correct large head stainless screws I cut down for replacements if needed. I was at a shoot last year where...

Navy Arms “Hawken Hunter” .58 Cal

I picked up a Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter in .58 caliber at a pawn shop last year. The action, trigger and brass trim is the same as the Zouave musket but the barrel is a bit heavier at the breach. They had a Zouave musket on the shelf also but I didn't have the loose change to buy both. Looking...

How to make your precussion touch off every shot with out fail

The only real miss fires I've had with my side locks were caused by pieces of the caps getting stuck in the hammer of the firearm. The cap would blow apart and leave just the tip of the cap stuck in the hammer. This would deaden the next hammer strike on the nipple and cause a miss fire.

How to make your precussion touch off every shot with out fail

I would think having the hammer off the nipple while reloading would allow powder to flow into the flash channel along with using a magnum cap would take care of misfires. At least it has always worked with my side locks.

How Do "You" keep track of and safeguard your guns?

Don't talk about any fire arm you own and if you do down play it's value. I basically say my collection is made up of worthless second hand guns, mainly pawn shop finds. Get a good gun safe, a security system and a couple dogs. Keep good records of your collections and if you have a rare piece...

Patch Lube...I know, its been talked about a lot.

I have been using a dab of Bore Butter in the middle of the patch. Occasional the patch gets a little spit on it also. Been able to shoot about 45 shots with my .50 caliber Hawken without swabbing the bore and picked up a sixth place at a 100 yds free hand shoot last month so I would think the...
