    Just an observation

No limitations for me. I shoot all sorts of rifles. Enjoy them all. Started out with a BB gun, then 22s, then HP hunting and target rifles, then single shots of all sorts. Cap and ball rifles, flintlocks. My latest love is a new custom Hawken style rifle. Still have the rifle I shot my first...

    Pounding tight balls down?

Never had to hammer a ball all the way down a barrel. I often use a rubber mallet to start bullets and even round balls when target shooting but have always been able to push down to the breech. I can't tell any difference in accuracy between a very tight load and a moderate tight load. My...

    put it up

Sorry, I was referring to Hoppes #9 bore solvent. That is all I use for rust protection. Only use oils for lubricating parts. South Idaho is dry for sure but I've only lived here six years. Spent a year in Kentucky and that was by far the hardest place to keep rust off of firearms. Spent most...

    put it up

Hoppes #9 is what I wrote. I don't know what is in it but it has always prevented rust for me. On the rifles and in the bores. Read an article recently, couple years anyway, that 3in1oil is an excellent rust preventative. I'm sure it's oil. Oils are well known rust preventers.

    put it up

Wiped my rifles down with WD40 after a match at Springfiend Oregon. Stowed them in a hard case. When I got home to Tacoma they were badly rusted. I don't use it for firearms anymore. Been using Hoppes #9 since I was a kid and it still works excellent. Have tried others but Hoppes is all I need...

My round ball has a tit

I have a nipple story. A true story. I had the thought of posting it, but. I'll wait for a nipple thread. But in the mean time, I have a lady friend who rolls her balls an a dinner plate to make sure they're round.

Anyone ever experienced burning embers in your barrel after a shot?

Nope, never have. I don't shoot cannons.

    Best alloy for long bullet

In my 38s, for target shooting I use about 40 grains. Usually OH shooting but have proved to be very accurate from the bench when sighting in.

    Best alloy for long bullet

I load breechloaders, breechloading muzzleloaders and muzzleloaders with groove diameter alloy bullets at times. Depends on the setup. The false muzzle allows muzzleloading groove diameter bullets. In a clean bore that is, don't try in with a dirty fouled bore.

    .58 ball size

.570 in my Green Mountain barrel.

    Best alloy for long bullet

Currently I'm using pure lead bullets and paper strips at just over bore diameter. Just enough tension on the lands to keep the strips in place as the bullet goes down the bore. Grease groove bullets , 40 -1 have often been extremely accurate. But as always only you can determine the proper...

Are round balls going the way of caps, etc?

I cast a hundred and six .570 balls yesterday. Been casting balls n bullets forty seven years now. I would much ruther say, oh James, take the Packard and drive to Sportsmans Warehouse at Idaho Falls and do pick up .570 round balls for me. And do make a day of it for yourself, James, you...

What is it with curved buttstocks?

Are we talking about butt plates or buttstocks? Curved buttplates go against your arm just above your bicep. the big wide flat ones go wherever you want. I shot one of them rifles with the downward curving buttstock. It hammered my cheek and I don't like the looks of them much. Having said...
