Brackets to Hang My Brown Bess

We just moved into a new to us house. It has a beautiful brick fireplace in the family room/kitchen. The fireplace has a large firebox and a mantel made from a floor beam removed from a local home that was built in the mid-1800s. My wife now wants to hang my Brown Bess over the fireplace. Do...

    New Patch Knife

Here is a link to the knife I purchased. Look around the site. They have several different patch knives. I was at the Smoky Mountain Knife Works and looked at several patch knives. I personally liked this one best. https://www.smkw.com/medium-patch-hunter-burlwood

    New Patch Knife

Thanks, Tallpine! I suspected all along it was just a decoration. It is neat looking. Spanish Notch does have a nice ring to it.

    New Patch Knife

Thanks for the several explanations that have been presented for what the doo-dad is used for. I especially a “decoration” and peephole. My favorite however, is “Make something up.” If I do make something up, apparently nobody will ever be able to say I’m wrong. I love this group!!!

    New Patch Knife

You could certainly do that if the doo-dad is larger on a larger knife, but on my patch knife, the doo-dad is pretty small.

    New Patch Knife

Thanks for all you replies. Whatever the doo-dad, is I really like the knife. I guess I'm free to tell anyone who ask what it is, to say it is whatever you want it to be!!

    New Patch Knife

This past weekend I was at the Smoky Mountain Knife Works. I picked up the patch knife you see below. The knife has a doo-dad on the blade just in front of the handle. Does this have a name and what is it for? Thanks, Jack

    Knife Identification

I have spent an hour or so looking for the Pakistan knife and have not found anything that even remotely looks like the knife we are talking about. I’ve have searched “folding knives from Pakistan” on Google. I have searched “folding knives from Pakistan” on smoky Mountain Knife Works sites...

Colonial Long Rifle vs Kentucky Long Rifle

It sounds to me like just about every kind of long rifle was available during Daniel Boone’s day. What you had was simply what fit your taste and budget. I also found an interesting video on You Tube of the Gunsmith in Colonial Williamsburg. They made fairly plain rifles with some brass...

Colonial Long Rifle vs Kentucky Long Rifle

Thanks, Dave. I think that pretty well covers my question! Now, if I want to look for a Kentucky long rifle, more of the latter type that Daniel may have used, where should I look? I want a nice rifle, but expense is a consideration. Thanks! Jack

Colonial Long Rifle vs Kentucky Long Rifle

What is the difference between colonial long rifles, like those made during the 18th century, and those of Daniel Boone’s day? I have been shooting my smoothbore Brown Bess for a while and I am now interested in a flintlock long rifle.

    Holes in a Cartridge Box

I know what you mean about ball size. I purchased some .0735 balls before I knew what I was doing. That statement is not to imply that I know what I am doing now. :) I will eventually melt them down, once I get a mould, and pour them for a size that I can use. I used the 0.735 ball as a...

    Holes in a Cartridge Box

Hi All. I purchased a new cartridge box for my paper cartridges that will be used in my Brown Bess. The holes in the block are so small that a 0.735 naked ball will not fit in the hole. The ball is just about the same size as my bore. I am going to make a new block to go into the cartridge...

    Making Paper Cartridges

I have tried newsprint as a paper for making paper cartridges but have found it tears easily. What have you found to be the best paper for making paper cartridges? I want to make cartridges for my Brown Bess. Thanks.
