What does a longer barrel add to a rifle's ability that a shorter one gives up ?

Another thing: If you're tall and a stand-up fellow, a long barrel puts the muzzle at a handy height for loading operations without having to bend over. Less likely you'll inadvertently get vital parts in front of the muzzle as you're doing it, too. I suspect the ease of straight stand-up...

    Are Shippers Targeting Guns?

Maybe so. This one was broken by landing very hard on its butt in the box.

    Are Shippers Targeting Guns?

I disagree, Nick. This could not have happened without a severe blow that would damage any stock. The gun was well packed. The boxes had suffered major crushing on the end where the butt was. The shipper was UPS, not USPS in this case. There are other threads for opinions on Middlesex and Indian...

    Are Shippers Targeting Guns?

This is what happened to a long package shipped from Middlesex Village Trading Company, not labeled as a firearm but conspicuously likely to be one. It was well padded with bubblewrap and peanuts in sturdy double boxes. It had to have been "spiked" hard on the butt end. I was able to find most...

    Are Shippers Targeting Guns?

The same happened to me (United Parcel Service) with an unmentionable antique military rifle. It was irreplaceable and I would have had to surrender it to file a claim. I glued it together successfully, and it takes close inspection to notice the fracture.

    Uberti 1849 Wells Fargo Problem

With models having a loading lever, you turn the cylinder so the ram piston (whatever they really call it) pushes against the cylinder between chambers. Push the lever down and it pops right off. No lever on the Wells Fargo, alas.

Muzzleloading ... don't let THIS happen to YOU!

My usual method of removing rust from firearms (which usually are or have been blued) is to simply boil the rusty metal in water and wipe away the loosened, softened residual rust. Leaves rust blue where the rust spots were.

    Shots Per Shooting Session?

With my flintlock patched ball rifle, 10-12 is typical. With cap and ball revolver, 48-60 is about right.

How do you cock your lock?

On my doglock fowler, to bring it to half cock and set the dog it works to pull the cock back with my right index and middle fingers while pushing the dog forward with my thumb. Then it's easy to be consistent when it's time to bring it to full cock by using the same two fingers. Perhaps that's...

Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

I built my flintlock Tennessee Mountain Rifle kit over the winter of 1980-81, having gotten it for my birthday in November 1980. Doggone, I didn't know they dumped the early models at a discount! Mine is clearly the later model, stocked in cherry. I just weighed it a couple of nights ago...
