    1863 sight install

I’ll see if I can find it. It was actually about soldering jewelry, but the techniques still apply. I wasn’t sure about the blueing so I removed it before I soldered. I know you have to heat evenly both surfaces to be soldered, plus apply lots of flux and burn off the excess before soldering.

    1863 sight install

Thank you much appreciated! I was surprised how well it came out for my first time soldering.

    1863 sight install

I may remove it at some point if I decide to leave it like this. I did remove the writing on a Remington 1858 I “aged”.

    1863 sight install

So I’m happy with the results considering it’s my first time silver soldering. The original press fit brass sight was way too low, so I took it out and tried press fitting a few sights I made from washers, a penny etc… with no success. I decided to try silver soldering after watching a few...

    Homemade caps

If you clean your gun after shooting it won’t corrode any more than any other cap. It does leave a rust colored residue on the cones but it cleans right off no problem. But it isn’t rust.

    Homemade caps

You bet! It doesn’t hurt to make your own too for backup. Plus it adds to the hobby, like making your own powder or pouring lead, which I still haven’t done yet!

    Homemade caps

Midsouth shooters supply has cci #11Magnum caps for 120.00 per thousand and currently no hazmat fee with a code they have posted. As far as homemade caps and cappers I haven’t tried it but probably not. The caps can be reliable if done consistently and simply using prime all and acetone with...

1858 Remington History and cool stories.

The lower rifle looks like an early air rifle. My dad had one he bought in a gun shop in New Hampshire back in the 70’s. It was made by Quackenbush, but it was made probably early 1900’s and call ed a bicycle rifle. Looks similar to the one in the picture.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I wonder if putting a wad between the balls would help. Just a thought. I think this is an interesting experiment. Thanks for doing the work and posting your results.

    DIY Defarbing and Refinishing

I aged some by getting a plastic container with a lid. Get a piece of wood or plastic or anything to make a platform to put inside the container to put your brass pieces on. Then make a mixture of vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and table salt. I never measured the amounts I just mix whatever...

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

I hear that. I use modern weapons to potentially save mine or my family’s life. Now if the country went to crap, I would still use modern weapons, but I would load up my cap & balls and keep them around and ready for backup if needed.

    DIY Defarbing and Refinishing

I’ll have to try that next time. I just mixed a little BC cold blue paste with water and wiped it on and off several times. Then a bit of Laurel mountain browning solution mixed with water and did the same as with the bluing/ water mix. When the finish was where I wanted it I rinsed it and dried...

Fancy Wood - Making my own grips

I bet you could make a nice side business selling stock sizes for various single actions, and maybe offer slightly oversized or undersized for those that want them. Your grips are beautiful! You have a great skill and obviously you have the equipment to pursue it!

    DIY Defarbing and Refinishing

Here is one I did of a Pietta Remington. Of course nothing about this screams original, it’s just I wanted a shorter barrel and rounded birds head type grip and I like that type of finish. I may do another one some day, just too many things on my plate these days.
