Hey, if it does what you need, enjoy, and have fun.

    Non lead round balls -

Energy means nothing at all. I have yet to have a pure lead round ball not exit the far side of an animal. The destruction they leave in the chest is incredible. How much energy a bismuth ball has or looses doesn't matter at all, not even a little bit. What does matter is you have a hard sphere...

    Colerain or Rice........?

I recently had both a Colerain and Rice in my hands. Due to a very poor job by the supplier, I returned the Colerain. Honestly I don't see what is so special about Rice. I have a 42" C profile swamped 54 caliber with round "radius" rifling. The outside of the barrel looks like it came right...

    Non lead round balls -

@Historian, I'm sure the .600 works really well. I definitely would not be shooting a non-expanding .440 ball through a deer, or even a .490 for that matter. Bismuth leaves a lot to be desired from lead, but it does work. Besides the huge cost increase, lead is simply better in every manner...

That's not very good. You can do better than that with a cylinder bore. Not a knock on you, just saying your loads can be better than they are.

    Duck and Goose bismuth shot

Well, no sandhill crane to speak of. I'm not sure where they are, but I can't find them. I did get into some good ducks and geese today. I picked this spot hoping to intercept a tundra swan, but they all skirted the decoys. I must have had to watch 50 pass by me today. Oh well, I'll try a...

    Loading shot without wads

Me either. I'd have to be a LONG ways from the truck before I ever considered using leaves instead of walking back for the wads I forgot.

    Loading shot without wads

In my testing, plastic wads shoot slower than cardboard wads. It wasn't a gigantic difference, but more than I expected. Does that mean one seals better than the other, I don't know. I just know that a card wad will shoot faster than a lead shot wad. Maybe a steel shot wad is a different story...

    Loading shot without wads

In what way does that pertain to "scrunching up some news paper or old T shirt"? I've tested scrunched up garbage as wadding. I'm sure if you stuff enough in there, eventually you will get a seal. for example a recent test I did. With card, the same stuff he is planning to use for overshot...

    Loading shot without wads

Forget all that scrunching up stuff. It will go bang, but it won't be good. Use a the cereal box for everything. Use 4 or 5 over the powder, and one over the shot.

First day turkey with a flintlock

Maybe someone should tell Feltwad the two ways we hunt black bear in the lower 48? I dump a whole bunch of bread, dognuts, cookies, candy, anything tasty in the woods. Wait for the bear to show up, and shoot him while he stands still 30 yards away. Super easy, nothing to go wrong. *It also...

    Non lead round balls -

While I have not, and never will fire a bismuth patched ball at an animal, I do see issues with it. From testing bullets, bismuth even at a 12% tin, is brittle. Bismuth makes really good shotgun shot, but as a bullet, it leaves a lot to be desired. Does that mean bismuth can't be used for...

First day turkey with a flintlock

Why Hawaii for a Rio? If you just want to go to Hawaii I can understand that. Luckily I can get a Merriam's, Rio, and Eastern right here in South Dakota, although I'd have to be somewhat lucky to draw three tags in a year, and it would probably have to be both spring and fall to get all 3. I...

First day turkey with a flintlock

Does that really surprise anyone? Ring-necked pheasant are from the plains of China. From the pictures I've seen of their native grounds, you could swear they were the Dakotas, if not for the different crops and tons of houses today. Surprise, surprise, pheasants have taken the strongest hold in...

    Gifted a nice SXS

I don't know how I missed this thread. Last winter I bought an old shotgun, probably a bit older than this one, barrels are 1850's. Like yours, most of the bore looks great, except right at the breech. Mine might not be quite as bad, but it isn't that much better, especially when you consider...

    Olde Eynsford Black Powder

Looks to me that Herb tested three rifles, and both 3f and 2f Goex and OE. That's more than one test. I also did the same thing, but with 2F and 1F, in a rifle and a shotgun. My results are the same as his. As you can see, as far as speed goes, there's a slight edge to OE, but nothing to really...

    Olde Eynsford Black Powder

I think people compare Goex to Swiss too closely. The problem I see is that the grades clearly aren't even remotely close to comparable. A Swiss Fg is about like a Goex FFFg in size. If you compare those two, I'd think the Goex would usually provide higher velocities. Not that long ago I tried...

    Olde Eynsford Black Powder

I've been waffling between standard red and Olde Enysford for a few years, mainly in Fg grain. Here is what I notice. Grain size/shape appears the same for both Velocity is slightly higher with OE with equal volumes; 5%-10% faster, nothing crazy. 10 extra grains of powder does the same thing...

First day turkey with a flintlock

Nice. I won't be out for the fall season for almost a month yet. I loved smoked meat, you can't go wrong. I personally like to pluck them, bake them, and eat with some kind of a berry sauce and butter. Cranberry is the standard, but I like a little sweeter like blueberry.
