    What's in your powder horn

You must have little kids. That's a good one. I don't know how you will ever get a snickers bar out of there.

    Large caliber

I sure do... as a smooth bore. 10 gauge/78 caliber is my choice. I can kind of see a 68 caliber rifle for some game like grizzly bear, or maybe some of dangerous game in Africa like Cape buffalo. For the most part though, anyone shooting a 68 or bigger caliber is probably doing close range...

    What's in your powder horn

Fg Goex Olde Eynsford. I hadn't shot all of August, and when I took it out last weekend for goose season, my plug was loose. It was loose enough it could fall out under gravity. I've had this horn for 2-3 years, and the plug was always tight, I'm not sure what happened. Apparently the dry...

    Large caliber

I would never consider 50 or 54 caliber a large bore. I consider 63+ cal to be large bore. 45 to 62 is medium size. I have no idea what my favorite large bore rifle would be. I don't see much point in a large bore rifle. That's smoothbore territory.

    Hunting with Smoothbore

For your purposes, a 20 gauge would suffice with lead. They will hold a good enough pattern at 20 yards for turkey, and even 25 yards with the right combo. For big game, I'm going to assume you would be using a round ball. A 20 is definitely enough for upland game and small game. With non-toxic...

    why difference in powder charge?

This is not true, or at least so far exaggerated to be false. You might not be too far off with 30 grains producing 600 fps. At 50 grains, you would likely be north of 1000 fps. At 70 grains, you are probably north of 1200 fps. This is based on actual chronograph testing with a muzzleloading...

T/C 12g New Englander max safe loads

Ok, I have to know. What compels you to load 63 and 68 grains? Why would you not load 60 and 65 grains?

T/C 12g New Englander max safe loads

I'm sure there is, but look at how really low the pressures are. People like to compare to modern shotguns, but when a comparable blackpowder load is only doing 2,000 psi, it's hard to compare as far as safety. That's more comparable to a modern air rifle, than a modern smokeless powder shotgun...

    Not in the Midwest

I wouldn't consider the others either. The only one I might consider is Missouri, and that's a special case. It's amazing that people point this out every month or so, and nothing ever happens to a plain, out in the open, error.

    Favorite Shot Size

For squirrel, it doesn't really matter that much. I mostly shoot #5, so that is what I use on squirrel. It normally passes completely through. I don't use either shot type you mention anymore. Lawrence or Westcoast Magnum shot is the only thing I buy. There is no good place to buy shot anymore...

    Thoughts on long-barreled smoothbores

Those first two numbers are comparing a 10" to a 26" barrel. That's a pistol vs a rifle. I was surprised there wasn't a bigger difference. Then 1200 to 1250 fps, come on man. That is next to zero change. Go from 32" to 42", and the difference might not even be that much. No, 50 fps is nothing...

    Thoughts on long-barreled smoothbores

That's burning powder. There's lots of solids in blackpowder, that's why it smokes, and why it leaves fouling in the bore. Unburned powder, is unburned powder. There is a theory that you shoot over a white blanket, or snow, and you work up in powder until you see black particles on the snow. Of...

    Thoughts on long-barreled smoothbores

It is a good question, and nobody has a good answer. The velocity thing, we can never prove. Even if someone came up with genuine 18th century powder to shoot, you can always argue the resulting 200+ years have certainly effected its performance. The powders we have today are fantastic. There...

T/C 12g New Englander max safe loads

Personally from what I've seen of them, I'd have no problem shooting up to 1 5/8 oz loads, maybe 120 grains of powder. Realistically the only reason you would want to go that heavy on shot would be turkey, and you'd be better off around 100 gr or less powder at that point. 1 3/8 oz is a pretty...

    Daniel Boone rifle information

Are you sure on the caliber? I don't know anything about his rifle, but from what I know of Daniel Boone, he seemed more of a squirrel hunter than anything. I'd think 36 caliber would be more inline with his uses. I could be completely wrong.

    Ten or one

That depends on what people consider so-so. I'd rather have 10 Thompson Center's, than 1 custom built rifle. I might be tempted to trade it all for 1 custom built sxs flintlock shotgun.

    Amusing/Ridiculous Muzzleloading Misconceptions...

I've read about electric ignited muzzleloaders, but it has been many years now since I last saw anyone try. It always ends up as an impractical, questionable reliability failure. These are not static discharge at all, these were battery powered. I'm pretty sure Larry Pletcher did a lot of his...

I finally started my golden age Lancaster build.

Update today, I pulled the barrel with no problems. The tang, and breech end up to about 12" of the barrel is bedded beautifully. The muzzle end and back about 6" are also bedded beautifully. The middle section has some spots here and there that were not touched, apparently I did not add enough...

    Laminated Bore and questions

Oh, you are talking about the finish? No, that is not unusual at all. If anything, that bore looks smoother than a lot of modern shotgun barrels. Heck, it looks better than a lot of rifle barrels.

I finally started my golden age Lancaster build.

I only have a mini update today, hopefully a picture tomorrow. I had intended to bed the barrel this week, but got swamped with work and other tasks. I went to do it yesterday, and realized I had not accounted for the dovetails on the bottom of the barrel for the lugs. I then bought some putty...
