    Lock "tuning"

I have an L&R Queen Anne. No issues, but like I said, I've heard that locks need tuning for optimal performance. It won't fire upside down.

    Lock "tuning"

I've read a few articles and heard on a bunch of youtube videos that most factory locks need to be "tuned" to give optimal performance. What exactly does this entail? Do any of you have a standard procedure you do to your new locks? I can't imagine being able to do anything to it besides...

    A bit of a pickle...

I just use a slightly undersized brush covered in a cotton patch. It holds on to the patch better than the other options.

    A bit of a pickle...

All right everyone, a couple grains of FFFFg in the touchhole, a small fizz sound, and the rod came out about two inches, enough for me to grab it. Thank you for the help.

What kind of velocity on the ramrod am I looking at here?

It's very, very close to all the way down, but I'm not sure if it is completely.

    A bit of a pickle...

So after a successful day of shooting my TVM Early VA, I've come home, and while cleaning, it, managed to break the ramrod with wire brush/cleaning patch in the barrel, leaving the broken end of the rod about 3" inside the barrel, beyond my reach. Any ideas on how to get it out?

2F vs 3F in the barrel

Just play with it. My .54 1-70" twist likes 75 FFFg for the best accuracy. It'll cut one hole a 50 yds with that load, but the same amount of FFg will yield about a 3.5 " group.

    3fff or 4ffff

I've had the same pound of 4F since I've been flintlocking (9 years this Christmas). I still have a bit of it left, but I've tried 2 and 3F in the pan before. I can't say I've ever noticed a difference; it really comes down to your choice of balancing potentially soaking up more moisture for a...

    Front sight problem

Tap it down flush with the barrel, or just enough to put a bow in it that widens it?

    Front sight problem

I'm thoroughly enjoying my TVM early Virginia, and am very pleased with its accuracy. When I go to the range, I begin by taking a few casual offhand shots to get the barrel warm and fouled, and yesterday I noticed that it was way left when I had had it zeroed last time. I checked my front...

    First Longrifle

I have almost exactly what you want. Left-handed Early Virginia from TVM, no carving, but with features that are more associated with being "early"--42" swamped barrel, brass trim, L&R Queen Anne flintlock, premium+ maple, and .54 caliber. My old Investarms Hawken had a patchbox that I never...

Figured out what my rifle likes

I measured the center of the group at 100yds to be about 1.5" high and 2 1/8" left of the bull. This put it 1 5/8" below the tight 50 yard group. I was expecting more drop than that at 100 yards; I'm not overly concerned, that just extends my point blank range. The sun was very much in my...

    It's a 1:70 twist. And I think I've found my load.

Figured out what my rifle likes

This is a 4-shot 50 yard rested group with my .54 TVM Early Virginia with a 42" swamped barrel. Load was .530" ball, .018" patch lubed with spit, and 75 grains of FFFg powder. The shot at the top was a bad one that was my fault and I called. Didn't take a picture yet, but the 100 yd...

    .54 hunting loads

What is the Davenport Equation? I was already thinking the same thing- accuracy is more important, provided the load is at least sufficient. I've only had two sessions with my new piece, one was just messing around in the woods to break in the barrel a bit, and the other was at the range...

It was empty; only a few granules would have been there to ignite-I had trickled it empty beforehand.

    powder horn woes

I started with wire, then I moved to a drill bit by hand. I got progressively more and more violent until I advanced to the drill. I reamed it out with the drill and now it works. Thanks for the ideas; it should be good to go now.
