    Second Knife

Thanks Flint, unfortunately, while many strange things can be found in my shop, buffalo fat isn't one of them... Here's another I just finished.

    Second Knife

Still very elementary, but I'm happy with it. I used maple scales, pinned with plain steel nails, and boiled up some walnut shells for stain. How did they seal wood back in the day, with bees wax, or did they just stain it with no sealer?

Help! Does anyone have any pics of a pc sheath? I can't find much, and want to keep this as close to the real thing as I can. Thanks!

Thank you for all your nice comments. No, I didn't stabilize the scales, however I have worked with this particular wood extensively, mostly in turning fly rod grips. It is from small burls out of scrub cherry trees from Pennsylvania. It is very hard, but the real problem is checking and...

    First Knife

I have a good friend who has given me a lot of muzzleloading equipment, but will never take any money, so I figured he can't say no to a gift, especially a knife. I tried to make this period correct to the 1800s. How did I do? It is my first attempt, and is a Green River Blade from TOTW. I...

    Not a Craftsman, but...

went into my garage and emerged hours later with a few trinkets I made. Certainly not the beautiful work some of you post, but functional. Not sure how the brush will hold up, used bucktail, may have to do one with pig bristles or something tougher. Measures are 75 and 100 grains...

Not sure about the diameter/origin of the balls, will have to slap a caliper on them. Some of the patches were very 'wet' while others had much less lube...was using an OLD tube of bore butter, that had some tiny hard grains in it, guessing it was too old. And how much lube should a patch...

Thanks again, will definitely contact TC. 'Nother question: a guy at the range said consistency is the key to accuracy with bp. I noticed that some loads were very difficult to push down the barrel while some went much more smoothly. Is this because my patches were lubed inadequately? I...

It is a TC Hawken made around 1985.

    First time

Thank you, next question: had some ignition problems today. Got this rifle used, and it has a very rough frizzen--the flint strikes an area that is very scored, almost looks like a washboard. It destroyed the flints. Should it be resurfaced with sandpaper, or replaced entirely?

    First time

Got it cleaned, and it wasn't as hard as I had imagined. I scrubbed the barrel in a bucket of hot soapy water, and 8 or so dry patches later they were coming out clean. Yeah, rotten eggs is right! One question, is there a right side to insert the escutcheon pin? I looked at the manual on...

    First time

Shot a muzzleloader for the first time today! Friend took me to the range at a muzzleloading club where he is a member, and I loved it. Can't wait to shoot again, but now I gotta clean the darn thing. Hate cleaning guns.

    Powder Horn

Cliff, the plug is aspen that had been attacked by bark beetles. Sadly the log was mostly decayed so I was able to salvage only small pieces. By trial and error I have learned how to stabilize small pieces with epoxy and or CA. To Everyone, thanks for your comments and advice. Got another...

    Powder Horn

It is airtight under a lot of pressure. I cut the threads very carefully and left a bevel so it seals up when screwed in tight. Also after cutting the threads I hardened them and built them up with CA, then put a little wax on them to keep it operating smoothly.

    Powder Horn

Yep, sorry about that paracord I knew someone was gonna get on me about that. Didn't have any thongs and haven't found a good local source for leather... I am totally new to muzzleloading, how does powder keep in a horn? Do you only fill it during hunting season and then empty it, or is it...

    Powder Horn

This is my first attempt at anything black powder. Looked at pictures on the WWW, ordered a horn on ebay, and here is the product. In spite of reading warnings from experienced builders, I ended up drilling a hole out thru the side while drilling the spout, but some shavings and epoxy hid it...
