    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

According to research some of these paper cartridges with small powder loads were of 4F or finer powder to bring the velocity up, especially if it’s not a sporting grade powder like Hazards. 4F and finer powders have been found in metallic cartridges disassembled for display by our very own...

    Ruger Old Army

I don’t know, but I’ve read there’s a book written by one of the men who designed it and it seems there was some inspiration from an old design.

    Ruger Old Army

I guess I wouldn’t know, it’s the single time I’ve had to use them. My father has several Ruger’s but I’ve never heard him mention having to use their services either. Is it really that bad?

Just giving you the results the calculators gave.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I ran your numbers through the P-Max Swiss powder calculator and came up with 790 fps producing an estimated 13.7K psi pressure. Run a single ball through a ballistics calculator at 790 fps and each ball has only 195 ft/lbs of energy. Two caliber sized holes though. That pressure spike would...

    Ruger Old Army

Mine shoots just fine with a ball, but shoots high with my bullets so I contacted Ruger and in short order a .45 Colt front sight arrived with some paperwork. This was a little over a decade ago.

Interesting Cap & Ball Paper Cartridge Information

Way back when there was the Percussion Pistol Yahoo group which had a member who had tested an original Hazard’s pack of .44 cal cartridges. Disassembly showed 4F powder and testing showed it to be comparable to Swiss powder. His research showed Hazard’s introduced their new Pistol Powder. 36...

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

    My 2013 is not a slow twist. It’s roughly 1:16”. It’s a Sheriff’s model.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

I’m not sure why they chose to use a slower 1:30” twist. Their Shooter’s Model uses the original gain twist I believe I’ve read. I would assume since it’s a base pistol, mostly for reenactors, collectors, and enthusiasts. I’d venture to guess it’s cheaper/easier than a faster twist. But it’s...

    2013 IIRC

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

The older ones do, and if you look at their current data it claims that they still do outside of the Shooter’s Models. 1:30” I believe.

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

When I got my Pietta NMA I was told they all had a slow twist for a ball so one of my first bullet designs was to create a bullet the length of a ball so as not to give up any. It weighs 195 grns and is just 0.460” long. As it turns out mine has a 1:16” twist…

    Maximum loads for 1858 Remington

Seriously??? There’s one huge variable you keep dismissing. I created the bullet to create a lot of pressure, much more so than any designs intended for percussion revolvers, along with it weighing much more (285 grns) than any you’ll find, yet it’s just a hair longer than the Lee 255 grn...

Pietta 1858 New Army revolver and conical sizing

My 2013 Pietta NMA measures .442 x .4535” but I reamed my chambers. I assumed they were there .446” like I’ve commonly read.

    Conicals for revolvers

The bullets I first created have a short seating base and can be tipped, but those with a longer seating base won’t do that. When loading bullets I no longer need to deal with the extra loading step of lubed wads. When loading paper cartridges I still have to seat them with the loading lever...

    Conicals for revolvers

That and bigger bullets make bigger holes. It’s precisely why I’m making a bullet for my .44/.45s instead of using a .36. And when the velocity is lower like with black powder you upped the size of your projectile to make it more effective.

    Conicals for revolvers

I find this interesting as it seems common to hear how when it was brought back the soldiers became happy once again, much like how we’ve read of the Marines being reissued old 1911s and becoming as happy as a Marine can be.

    Conicals for revolvers

Lee and some of the traditional conicals like Eras Gone I believe.

    Conicals for revolvers

They’re designed specifically for cap n ball revolvers. Maybe they had a bad run? They wouldn’t sell many if they didn’t work. I much prefer to create my own designs as there’s nothing else like them. But I do find the Ruger 220 grn RN interesting and might get it to use with the RB ram.
