    Loading revolver

I like the mess created by shooting BP... from the lube all over the barrel to the smell I bring home on my clothes... :) I like the oxyoke lubed pad over the 25 grains of powder and .454 ball (leaves a complete ring of lead shaved off when rammed in the cylinder). I started without pads, then...

Old Thompson Center Hawken price check.

I paid $200 for a TC Renegade like that.... minor crack in the stock.... and the barrel took a lot of work. But otherwise in excellent shape. I bet I have Scouts shoot it #1000 times since. $399 sounds a bit high, but years from now if you keep it, what's a couple bucks. Its the only one I have...

Stuck Brush in a Hawken 50

A length of coat hanger wire (or welding rod) with a bit of "J" bent into the end, and maybe corkscrew it a bit pushing it down there and backing out... I got a broken brush out like that when I first started... cheap.

First Cleaning (new to muzzle loading)

JohnT, You are right of course, I did not clarify the "soap and water method" I suggested, is for the "recently shot, normal fouling kind of cleaning". :hatsoff:

First Cleaning (new to muzzle loading)

It's pretty simple... don't over analyze it. I teach a basic NRA Muzzle Loader class and I demo just warm water with a couple drops of dish soap in a #10 coffee can. I use a brass range rod (it's 6"-8" longer than my wood rod, heavier and I like it), some saturated cleaning patches and some dry...

    Casting Round Ball

Been casting RB this summer... Wrinkled balls get throw back in to the pot.... Once everything it all hot you will have less wrinkles... (general rule of thumb I have found) I weighed a few in the beginning, most were close... but it's like using a micrometer, then marking with chalk then...

    Jukar Kentucky pistol, any value?

I picked up the same pistol from a NRA TC who was giving up on Muzzle loaders... I shoot Muzzle Loaders with Scouts and the Crew like shooting it. It's my only .45 Muzzle Loader. Shoots high, so I need to work on the rear sight. $50 is what I paid, as it was unfired.

    A couple of newbie questions

I second RMC for a Brass range rod.... I am about to order a 2nd. For end of day cleaning at the range, when I don't have to be home right away.... I might run a couple cleaning patches (I usually have some soaked in #13 Bore Cleaner..., then several dry patches, pull the nipple, and scrub the...

New CVA .50 Rifle and Jukar .45 pistol

I attended the last NRA Black Powder Instructor courses (Pistol and Shotgun) I needed, recently. Now, I have NRA Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun - (to include Black Powder for all 3) Instructor, as well as CRSO and NRA Training Counselor. The NRA Training Counselor was getting out of Black Powder...

How do I get ahold of Ohio Ramrod to get a punch for my .44 BP pistols? DG

    Shooters Box Plans...

I know this is an old post, but here is the box I am using.... I have added a brass handle on top and some brass latches to keep the lid locked down.

    Buying BP in Cincinnati-Dayton area?

My local club, Dayton Muzzle Loaders in New Carlisle sells to club members, 1 lb $14. A membership is $24 a year (range access). that's a better deal than paying a Hazmat fee. :hatsoff:

    Where do you shoot?

Dayton muzzle loader club range is ~6 miles from me, $24 a year. Really it's right in Mr. Boitnotts back yard. I take Venture Scouts out to shoot (no extra charge). We shoot all year long unless there's a farmer in the field. 50 yards is the max distance (I can't see much past 25).

TC Renegade - 2 hammer strikes needed

Took my TC Renegade .50 to the range last week. Seems it was taking two strikes of the Hammer for the cap to go off. Every powder charge of Goex fired on the 2nd shot. I changed out the nipple for a new one, and had the same thing happen. One fellow shooter suggested burnishing the nipple, so...

NMLA Muzzle loader class this weekend

Our camp Shooting sports counselor is both NMLA and NRA and Camp School trained. At the recent camp School course, he asked about the NRA and NMLA course being equivalent... but getting NRA course material needs NRA Certified Instructor to order. The course this weekend was the Rifle NRA...

500 RB this summer... should I cast or buy for new year?

The Scouts that would cast are part of the camp "Mad River Trace Program" (pioneer experience), and are at least 1st class. I would reserve it for the older Scouts in our Unit when we Period Camp. I just got the mould I picked up off eBay... looks to be a .36 caliber ball (or smaller), but...

NMLA Muzzle loader class this weekend

Getting excited about the NMLRA Muzzle loader class coming up this weekend at BSA Camp Birch in Yellow Springs, Ohio. I need this and the instructor course (Spring 2013) for the BSA Summer camp. Already have NRA instructor status of modern Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun. Nothing like the first...

500 RB this summer... should I cast or buy for new year?

I picked up an early mold (Civil War Style) for the Scouts to practice with... I think I have a small cast iron kettle... Now I need a spoon/dipper and moulds for the gun calibers I have: All RB Black Powder .44 - .45 Rifle .490 - .50 Rifle .457 - .44 Pistol I'm watching Ebay and Craigslist...

500 RB this summer... should I cast or buy for new year?

The BSA Camp already has a Pioneer program where Scouts spend the week in period cloths, live in Canvas tarps, and throw Tomahawk/Shoot Black powder.... I guess all I need is a reason to pick up some stuff.... I got my son a .44 BP pistol for his 16th birthday last year, and I want another for...
