Thanks everyone. Your feedback will certainly motivate me to finish the French Trade Gun and then get it out for practice. :)

    28 gauge ammo

Using my calipers again my bore is probably as much as .550. This conversation has been quite helpful so far in terms of learning about the ability to adjust for things. Thank you!

Thanks. I am new to shooting a smoothbore and looking forward to it.

I was just checking to see what you would recommend for the size of patched round balls in 28 gauge. Would .535 be the right choice or would .530 be better? The bore is .540 plus a few thousandths. I just got a French trade gun in the white and haven't shot it yet.

    Does anybody here try engraving?

Very cool engraving Dave. I appreciated the comments on using China white. The engraving block really makes the difference I bet also. Thanks for posting. How long have you been engraving?

The hack saw is pretty cool. Was the blade pinned at the opposite end?

    Does anybody here try engraving?

Hi 54ball, I like the work that Mike Brooks has done to add engraving to his builds at least from what I've seen posted. My focus is also on the folk art aspect. It is more fun and the direction i'd like to go. Thanks for your post. I'll keep looking for examples of his work too,.

    Does anybody here try engraving?

Hi Wick, I appreciate your input here and I'm real interested in this. I am going to get some mild flat steel soon to start practicing with a graver. The Crocker sharpening jig is something I'm checking out. Being a woodworker and carver, I have an assortment of ways of sharpening steel...

That is so cool and very encouraging also. I confess ignorance about the use of the chrome plated item or what it might be called, but recognize everything else.

That is awesome Tom. Thanks again. You have incredible talent there. I can draw well and carve wood well, but I've been intimidated by the idea of engraving for years. It would be cool just to tackle a simple design so my expectations are pretty low. Say Tom have you done "a dog chasing a...

    Does anybody here try engraving?

I'm with you about practicing on mild steel. Thanks. Does anybody have preferences on chasing hammers? I suspect that the cheap ones might have some limitations, but would it matter at the beginning stage?

    Does anybody here try engraving?

Please post your work. My expectations are that a simple design might be the slight enhancement I'm looking for. I'll probably be greatly humbled by some practice. Thanks

    Does anybody here try engraving?

Thanks everyone for those comments. Wow that is encouraging. J.D. that reference looks cool and one to save up for. It is fair to say I'd practice quite a bit before engraving some muzzleloader parts. I agree with you ApprenticeBuilder about no engraving is better than poor engraving and...

    Does anybody here try engraving?

Hi, I'm pretty new to the forum, but I have to ask if any of you try your hand at engraving on your rifles? I would like to incorporate some basic engraving on the steel parts just for the heck of it. I can't take up engraving as a new hobby, but it seems that a bit of engraving adds a bunch to...

period finish on walnut gun stocks

Thanks Elnathan. It makes sense that there would be some variation in manufacturing not to mention the patina on the finish might be variable also.

period finish on walnut gun stocks

Hey thanks for the input. I read your earlier posts on the subject too. This is an interesting project in seeking to be somewhat authentic on building a fusil with a walnut stock, but not ruin the beauty of a nice grained wood. You all are great to share your experiences. Ultimately, I plan to...

period finish on walnut gun stocks

I am wondering now if some our folks on the forum have used French red walnut stain and filler on walnut stocks. Has anybody used brownells product to enhance the color of walnut? This may not be HC, but still a nice way to finish the stock. What do you think?

period finish on walnut gun stocks

Thanks for the comments. I'm hoping the grain is nice and if so I actually lean toward the linseed oil finish approach too. Like you said, I've learned that some manufacturers like for the Springfield 1803 rifle oiled the stocks. It seems a challenge then of striking a balance between the new...
