    20 0r 16 ga. smoothbore

I was originally thinking 20ga. anyway, just through in the 16ga as after thought. Don't know about SxS, Haven't thought that far yet. I assume it would be heavier gun, but for turkeys or squirrels probably not an issue. Thanks for all the comments from everyone.

    20 0r 16 ga. smoothbore

I guess I need to find those ways of tightening pattern without choking.

    20 0r 16 ga. smoothbore

I really don't know anything about BP smoothbores, but am interested. I would not use for shooting on the wing. would use for turkeys and squirrels, but need a tight pattern for 35 yards. So, are all smoothbores choked, or how does one know if it is and what it is?? I see smoothbores...

YES, they are readily available around here at various donation thrift shops like Goodwill and others. Don't worry how they look at you at checkout.

    What would you do?

Great info! Now I understand, just what I needed. Looks like pretty nice manual there.

    What would you do?

Thanks for info, Jethro224 is kind enough to be sending me some .440 balls, so I guess I'll start there since we have the same rifle manufacture.

    What would you do?

Great info, gun did come with a screw in bullet puller so I'm not concerned about that. But, I want to make sure I understand what you are saying about marks all the way around the patch. Do you mean marks from lands, or both lands and valleys?? thanks again.

    What would you do?

Thanks for info and encouragement. With holidays coming probably will need wait to shoot. I am going to use real black powder. Still trying to figure best ball size to start with. My lands are .44 and valleys .45. I'm thinking .435 or .433, not sure. Then need to think of patch thickness...

    What would you do?

Thanks for reply, it made me measure again. Gun barrel does say Cal. 45. Human error, just wait till you get to my age! The 20yr old gun was never shot. Upon closer review I see there was some "gunk" in barrel, maybe a coating to protect it. I cleaned that out. So valleys still measure .45...

    What would you do?

Ya, I may need smaller balls too. I used micrometer in the .45 cal. and get .45 in the valleys and .41 on the lands, seems to be a big difference. Your .433 balls with a patch might be difficult with .41 on lands? Starting to get confused.

    What would you do?

UPDATE. I did the trade today and now have the unfired Pedersoli Pennsylvania for equivalent of $125. As a total beginner I think it is a good place to start. I can always upgrade if I want to later. I need to locate a BP gunsmith in southern WI to check it out. Know any?? That way if any...

    What would you do?

Still interested in more replies. I'm trading a bolt action 12 ga. valued at about $125. I'll try to attach my first attempt at posting a picture, of the Pedrsoli. Oh well, can't figure how to add a JPEG pic here.

    What would you do?

I'm looking to get my first BP rifle and am being offered a Petrsoli Pennsylvania .45 flintlock that is 20 yr old and has never been fired by owner. I can get very good deal, BUT I read about all the problems that come with some of the Petrsoli rifles. So, would you take the Petrosli? Or pass...
