    Fly Removal?

Before you get all blacksmithy and do any metal work or remove any parts, check the clearance of the sear arm and the wood above it and at its end. ( use some inletting black or lipstick) If it even lightly touches the wood, weather changes can cause incomplete engagement with the tumbler, as...

Anyone have hearing aid feed back using hearing protection muffs??

I just use electronic muffs. Don't need the HA when I do that.

What is the deal with the fouling ring

Don't let it dry; it's not milk any more if you do. I pre-punch stacks of patches which I store in prescription containers. I add lube just before heading to the range by squirting a dose of detergent down the inside of the container full of patches, (you could use moose milk for this) then...

I found an original civil war Enfield rifle.

As far bas I know, they were the same calibre as the regular issue; .577, so that they would use the same ammunition etc., just lacking the long range accuracy of the rifled guns which the British troops had.

I found an original civil war Enfield rifle.

If it's smooth bored, It may have come via India. Smooth bore Enfields were issued to native troops. Maybe some in N.A as well?

    Making patches

I bought a few arch punches to cut my own patches: (1 1/8",1", .75") to fit all of my guns. I buy patch material of appropriate thickness(s), and fold it several times, then pound the punch through to cut 16 or so at a time. I stack the cut patches in pill bottles dry, and before heading to...

    Flint Leather, Side Fit

If your leather is doing its job, the flint won't move. Some folks use very thick leathers, but I have found that trouser-weight (1/16") works best. Thicker stuff lets the flint squirm around, and eventually fall out often.

Flint works loose after multiple shots

You can move flints forward as they wear, but if the top is sloped and the leather thick, they will 'squirt' out after a few shots.

Very stuck minie ball, tried everything having to pull the breech plug

Store your ml muzzle down for at least a few days after oiling the bore and wiping it. It's surprising how much oil runs out of a 'dry' barrel some times. Mine are always stored muzzle down, and I never wipe before loading and have never had a problem. However, I still pop a cap or two with...

    Black powder on smokeless ranges

Lose the oiled/greased patches; water based lube doesn't burn.

Want to make Hudson Bay Blanket gun sleeve

I put a patch of soft leather on the inside where the lock is. Keeps crud off the wool and won't rub through.

Any other crazy kids out there?

I had a pump Daisy, I could shoot downhill without having to tip the gun up to get the next bb. Caught a couple of friends by surprise. Never happened with my group, but I have met 2 folks who got eye injuries from bbs, so I guess it can happen.

    My blunderbuss options

I got mine from Pecatonica. Good fun for salutes. I sometimes use it for trap; hit some if I can get the shot off quick enuf.

    Can’t find a rifle!

Buy the .50, and use REAL or similar projectiles. Or, as someone else suggested, buy a 'kit' and build it to your liking. (I have built several guns from parts supplied by Pecatonica Rifle Works, and have never been disappointed).

    Advice on getting started crafting.

No problem with learning curves! I am sure that the fancy stuff that is in use today was hardly ever seen on the frontier. Functionality is the by-word; it doesn't matter what it looks like so long as it does the job! After learning by making the basics, get into the fancy work as the spirit...

Leaving pellets in muzzleloader - how long?

Lots of folks and things get shot by 'unloaded' guns. I never try to save a load.
