    Egg taning deer hides

I use deer or pork brains for tanning. No problem. You must work the hide to make them soft. No short cuts. Takes about 3-4 hours. I use a cable, a pumice stone and lots of "elbow grease" to make them soft. Best done in cool weather. Then smoke them to keep them soft. Another item other than...

    Question about frozen hides

I've had several un-fleshed hides frozen for at least 2 years. Then I thawed them out, fleshed them and refroze till I had time to grain them. Thawed them out, grain them, then back into the freezer they went. Later, I defrosted 2, brained both of them, then put one back into the freezer. The...

    salt pork?

I'm not sure about using anything plastic. The Koreans had a problem pickling their cabbage using plastic containers rather than an earthern urn. I made a wooden box about 3'x 5'x 1&1/2'. It worked just fine. The meat should be placed on a layer of salt and then covered with salt. No piece of...

    Tell me about powder horns

Thanks to all. I appreciate it. I'm considering in making one. Things made by oneself are much more fun to use. I'm getting a late start on pre 1840 stuff but enjoying trying. I did make a buckskin shirt, including shooting some of the deer and brain tanning all the hides.

    Tell me about powder horns

How do you fill them? It appears that most must filled from the small end. Is the plug threaded whereas a larger opening is available. Pardon my lack of knowledge.

    Possible bag

thanks for all the suggestions. Maybe making a shooting bag from the thicker neck or butt of a hide might work best. If I do, I'll post a picture but I'm might slow on completing a project. My shirt was a year long project-kinda hard to make that first cut.

    Possible bag

I guess, "regular leather" would be, I think, vegetable tanned" My "bag" would be for only the essentials for shooting my flint lock.

    Possible bag

I'm thinking about making one and wondering should I make it out of brain tanned deer or go find some regular leather? The deer leather is real soft maybe not stiff enough. Or is that a concern. I have plenty of the deer leather.
