Advice on what gun to buy

 Guys, I appreciate all the wonderful advice. I just received a brand-new Lyman GPR flintlock in the mail! It's a beautiful rifle and the lock seems to throw sparks pretty well. I cleaned all the grease out of the barrel and action and re-lubed it. I see what everyone was talking...

Advice on what gun to buy

Thanks for all the advice guys. Your comments really helped me focus on what I wanted, which turned out to be "having some fun". I ordered a Lyman GPR flintlock in .50 caliber. The price was right and it has a great look to it. I can go to the range and pretend to be an old timer and feel...

    My first revolver shoot

I greased the nipples with TC bore-plug grease, but breakfree is the only lube I used on the rest of the pistol. I have to think that in the 1850s, people would have used almost any kind of oil they could lay their hands on. Does anyone know anything about lubes from that period? The action...

Advice on what gun to buy

Thats a fine looking gun. I can't help wondering how it feels. Does that stock point well? By fowler, you mean smoothbore?

    My first revolver shoot

I took a shower with it and then dried it with a fan. My understanding is that black powder residue is water soluble, so I soaped it up good and dried it thoroughly. I soaked it in breakfree afterward. Is this how you clean a revolver? My wife raised an eyebrow, but said nothing.

Advice on what gun to buy

I think I would prefer a rifle to a musket. The Lyman great plains is a good quality rifle? They are not very expensive.

Advice on what gun to buy

See there? You probably already saved me from making a terrible mistake. My first inclination was to buy a Lyman bottom of the line flintlock.

Advice on what gun to buy

Guys, I am just starting out in BP, so forgive me if I display my ignorance. I bought a stainless steel traditions deerhunter caplock at a pawn shop a few years ago and it's the only muzzleloading rifle I have ever fired. While it's been fun to shoot at the range, I would like to buy...

    My first revolver shoot

I bought a Pietta replica 1851 Navy colt through the mail last week and just fired it today. I know this is old stuff to you guys, but I have to tell someone and my wife is tired of listening to me. I picked up a brass ball/conical mold that looks very old at a pawn-shop a few years ago, so I...

    New old guy in Georgia

Greetings to everyone. I am a retired soldier and a history buff with a strong interest in military archeology. I have burned a lot of powder over the years, but not much BLACK powder. I am just a beginner at black powder shooting. I look forward to learning from you all.
