    Dropped Dragoon?

I agree. Did someone hammer on the barrel? It looks like it has a lip on the outside edge but what about the inside bore edge too? It may have a lip on it too. I think you need to find a gunsmith to redo the barrel muzzle on that gun.

Idiotic Store Policies are turning me away.

Well that’s possible as I have bought guns or other things at a store and if there is a problem then you have to take it up with the manufacturer not with the store. It is kind of annoying if there is a warranty problem etc.

Interesting Cap & Ball Paper Cartridge Information

Buffalos Arms happens to make combustible paper cartridges for .44 cap and ball pistols. It might be of interest to those who do not want to roll their own https://www.buffaloarms.com/6-44-calcombustible-cartridges-cpc44.html

    Scheels LIMITS Caps?!?

Yes it is the scalpers. They literally come in and grab everything up to resell. So I do not begrudge the store for limiting the numbers you can buy. I remember during the ammo shortages where I would show up at 6 am and I was like number five in line. Then at almost 9:00am when the store opens...

Anyone ever hunt with a handgonne?

Handgones were a weapon of war at the time. Hunting with them never entered anyone’s mind back then. But it would be extremely impractical to try hunting with them. Plus as mentioned already it may be illegal in some states. Of course if you are pretty good at trap and skeet shooting with a...

4 bore English Blunderbuss is done.

It is beautiful. Congratulations. Plus ouch on the pain factor and possible concussion when you fire it off. But guaranteed to stop any home invasion with one shot.

Do you think that modern ML firearms have any investment value?

Maybe after 50-60 years or so. I remember that most of the old WWI and WWII weapons were sold for as little as scrap metal prices up until the 1960s. But 50 years later, rifles bought for just their actions are going for premium prices nowadays.

    Repair or replace

I agree in that you should repair it. A new stock is more of a last resort kind of thing.

How long does 1’000 caps last for an average shooter

It really depends on how much shooting you do. As a kid I remember folks only using two or three shots for deer hunting, with one or two shots to test their gun to make sure it is working and still shoots where they aim. Nothing special on accuracy just in the pie plate range. Then the one shot...

Seeds shot? Anything used HC. PC

Yes, gravel, sand etc. another thought is rock salt, coarse salt and or seasoning spices. Thus they are pre-seasoned after getting shot.

    What is that guy doing?

I would say the fellow likely has his hand and fingers off to the side a little. Thus setting off the charge safely. You don’t want to mess with the shooters aiming by obstructing it. But putting a pinch of powder over the flash hole is reasonable too. Then set it off on command. But like you...

Should I or should I not?

If you are a collector investing in collectibles then by all means keep it pristine for 30-40 years when it might go up in value. Otherwise it is meant to be used and fired. Then go shoot it and enjoy it.

Interesting Cap & Ball Paper Cartridge Information

There were a lot of scandals back during and after the civil war where manufacturers reduced powder charges and bullet weight to increase profits. Some of the old surviving newspaper articles and court case documents were interesting. The government specifications had listed the bullet weights...

Why did odd stocks die out?

I agree it was the styles and fashions that change over time.

    Help with a derringer

If I had that little gun I would look to see if a model airplane propeller reamer would come close to fitting in the barrel. If the blades are too thick then carefully grind them down to fit the barrel slots. You can cut the smaller size steps off as desired too. The old Fox manufacturing prop...

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

The .38 S&W Special first came out in 1898. It was at first loaded with black powder. The longer cartridge case allowed it to hold 3 grains more powder than the .38 Long Colt. Thus giving it about 100 to 150 fps over the .38 Colt round. It has been said that the government requested a more...

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

The Army had chose to use a Colt revolver using .38 Colt cartridges. This was not the same as a .38 Special or .38S&W cartridges. But there was a lot of behind the scenes political things going on. The Army ranks wanted something that was like the .45 Colt cartridges. They wanted to be able to...

    Flintlock howdah?!

Nice. 20 guage too. You can stuff a big bullet down the barrels or use buck shot or bird shot if you want to. I like it. They made double barrel pistols almost as soon as the first single shot pistols were being made way back then. So yes flintlock doubles were legit from way back then.
