Your first ML rifle

I bought a .50 Lyman Great Plains Rifle in '85. I was in college and I Think I paid 250$ for it. I killed at least 15 deer with that gun. Wore the lock out on the inside and had to make new parts.I carved a 10 pointer chasing a doe on the stock. Put a peep on it. Still have it.

    Hard/Difficult loading

Brand new bore.....65 shots into it. no rust....sharp lands...yellow pre-lubed patches. Daughter bought me a .530 mold for Christmas. Will hand poured balls load easier than swaged?

    Hard/Difficult loading

Loading my Isaac Haines Rifle is difficult. 38" swamped barrel .54 cal (Buckeye-Chambers' Offering) .530 swaged round ball .010" cotton lubed patch. Really hard to load. I use a range rod to load before hunting and even then it is very hard to run down the barrel. I'm afraid i can't even...

    Made me another hunting bag.

My third bag. My new muzzleloader turned out so nice that my hunting bag wasn't up to snuff. Spent about 10 hours yesterday making me a new one. 5 oz. leather and trimmed it all with lamb skin.....equals alot of time. 2" gusset tapered to one inch. I used the brand on the hide for the back...

    Before the micrometer

I don't know much....but I know when Hawkeye uses silk for patching, he gets an extra 40 or 50 yards. LOTM

    New orleans ace pistol

You need a spring vise. I have seen people on youtube use a visegrip......but not recommended.

Finished my 1st rifle tonight. Made some mistakes along the way. I reckon it took 120-150 hours but I am slow and spend a lot of time staring at stuff trying to figure things out. I am very happy with it and will be hunting with it in just a few months. [/img]

    lock function.

Thanks gentlemen. I learned a lot from this thread. I spent about 10 hours last weekend inletting my double set trigger, lock and side plate and getting it tuned to cock and fire. I had to take nearly 3/16" off the trigger plate before I could cock the lock. I gave up a few times and walked...

Thanks for the stoning info. I have some deep scratches that are being a pain but the lock is looking pretty good. A little to shiny....I will scotch bright it or sand it to have a brushed finish.

The back is only 3/8" above stock now. Front is around a quarter. Took me a long time to fit the button closure but it actually works pretty good. It is the one that you hammer into the wood. I was a wreck when I was installing it. Still need to replace screws....for the third time.

Thanks for the input. I have thinned it down considerable. Not making a new brass end. This is the first gun I have ever built and I am quite sure there will be a list of things I will Have to live with.

Got my lock looking good. Put it back together. It won't cock. Half or whole. It will without the mainspring. As soon as I put the mainspring in, it won't engage.
